omaha
"it's the heart that matters more" "The only other good song in August & Everything After, besides Mr. Jones". This was how a friend of mine introduced Omaha to me. So obviously, my expectations for it were pretty high. They weren’t disappointed. The reason why it took me so long to finally write something about this song is simply the fact that I had nothing to write about this song. I still don’t, nothing ground breaking that is. Which is pretty apt, since I believe, there really isn’t anything really groundbreaking about Omaha. It’s just a song, a good song, nope, a really good song in a really amazing album. The one thing I like best about this song though, is that it is a good song in another way. Omaha, no matter how you look at it is not a pop tune, it doesn’t rely on some catchy groove or catch phrase lyric to draw listeners in. It’s the song as a whole that makes it special. It’s a very basic song, melody-wise and very down to earth. How I see it, it’s basically about going about with life. How after all is said and done, good and bad, we just all move on to something else, that’s how we live. The lines in the chorus, "Get it right to the heart of matters, it’s the heart that matters more" strike me the most. Basically, the message I get is no matter what goes on in one’s life, there’s always something to be learned, something to be experienced, focus on that, and everything will fall into place. Most Crow songs are about regret, sadness, for doing this, for not doing that, whatever, but not all of them are. Other songs are about hope. And Omaha is one of them. Just like in A Long December, when Adam says "I can’t remember all the times I’ve had to tell myself to hold on to these moments as they pass", Omaha, tells you to cherish those moments, try to see these moments for all the good that they are, make the best out of everything, because in the end, that’s the "heart" in everything that matters.
