Those of you who aren't fans of Sammi are probably wondering who exactly is this woman? Well, she's one of the most famous pop artists in Hong Kong. She has only gotten to this position after much hard work since the age of 15.
Sammi's singing career initiated when she entered a singing contest sponsored by TVB. At first, her family disagreed with the idea of entering the entertainment industry but her mother still allowed her to participate in the competition anyway as she thought Sammi wouldn't win aything anyway. To her family's surprise, Sammi actually went home with a bronze medal. Capital Artist then offered Sammi a singing contract. However, as much as she would have liked to start her singing career, it had to be delayed until she had finished secondary school. At the age of 18, Sammi signed up an 8-year sining contract with Capital Artist.
In the first few years of her singing career, Sammi was not going as well s she had expected and thus triggered the idea of quiting the entertainment industry. Obviously this did not happen as she then decided to perservere because she knew her hard work would pay off one day.
IN 1993, Sammi boosted her career by completely repackaging her image as she knew that this would stance would sell very well in the Hong Kong market. She dyed her hair in all sorts of colour, wore sunglasses that had coloured lenses. This new image soon became a youth subculture as all youths started to follow Sammi's footsteps and thus increased her popularity.
Sammi's luck came when she signed up with Warner Music in 1995. The first album that she released under this new recording label immediately had the effect of increasing her popularity trmendously.
The release of her first Mandarin album in 1996 was also a great success as it sold over 500,000 copies in Taiwan alone. Sammi also starred in the films 100% Feel and Feel 100%...Once More which were big hits at the box office. Sammi also had the opporunity to hold her first concert, known as X-Dimension, in Hong Kong. It was intially planned that Sammi would perform 6 sessions in total but due to the positive response from her fans, the conert was extended to 8 sessions. !996 was basically a year of opportunties and success for Sammi.
1997 was the year that we saw Sammi claim back her hard work put into singing through being given many awards ane of which included the most popular female artist in Hong Kong. She became the idol of many people and received much attention from the mass media.
In 1998, Sammi once again changed her image but this time not to a wild image but instead she went for a more sophisticated and mature look. This did not have any negative effects on her singing career as it was still in the process of growing and was progressing quite stable by that time. Also, Sammi was able to hold her first world tour that year. It was called the Sammi Star Show and it helped her increase her popularity globally.
So far, 1999 has been going in favour of Sammi. Not only did she have the chance to star the hit serial , but her newly released Cantonese album was one of the best selling albums in Hong Kong. Looking at her performance in the previous years, I believe that this year will be equally as successful.
