The Critic

©1994 Columbia Pictures

This series lasted 2 seasons: 1 on ABC and 1 on Fox (after guess who?). It had much of the same talent from "The Simpsons" and often was better. It now airs in reruns at Comedy Central Sundays at 10:30pm EST.

Characters:

Jay Sherman - This down-on-his-luck film critic (voiced by Jon Lovitz) was the focus of the show. He was "morbidly obese" and only liked foreign films and "Citizen Kane".

Alice Tompkins - She was Jay's Southern girlfriend in the second season and if the show had lasted longer, they probably would've been married. She was divorced to a country singer and took care of their young daughter Penny.

Martin Sherman - Jay's son from a previous marriage. Basically, a young Jay, but with a slightly better future it seemed.

Duke Phillips - Jay's boss, a parody of Ted Turner. Like Mr. Burns, but half as mean. One of the funniest supporting characters, besides...

Franklin Sherman - Jay's adopted father. Filthy rich, and out of his little mind. Resembled George Bush slightly.

Eleanor Sherman - Jay's adopted mother. Straight-on parody of Katherine Hepburn. Embarrassed Jay to no end.

Margo Sherman - Jay's teenaged sister, a real daughter of Franklin and Eleanor. The most normal person on the show by far.

Doris Grossman - Like Lunchlady Doris on "The Simpsons", a parody of the late Doris Grau who played both characters. Jay's makeup lady.

Jeremy Hawke - Australian ladies' man and actor, Jay's friend even though Jay probably hated his movies. Straight-on parody of Paul Hogan and other action heroes.

Vlada Velimirovic - Owned the restaurant Jay always dined in. Korean version of "The Simpsons"' Apu.
