Some Things Never Change - Chapter 4

by: Jess

As you kneel beside your bed tonight
Keep a little prayer for me in sight
Know that I will be there when you call
No that I will catch you if you might fall
Elizabeth
Go to sleep
I want to watch you breath
I want to feel God's peace
All I want…Is this
Elizabeth
As you kneel beside your bed tonight
Keep a little prayer for me in sights
Know that I will be there when you call
Know that I will catch you if you might fall
All I want is this
Elizabeth

Elizabeth cried. That was the first time she'd been able to listen to that since lucky died. "That was beautiful. Who was it?"

Liz looked up. It was Carla, Sonny had a lady here that worked for him named Maria. Carla was her eighteen-year-old sister. Liz had become friends with her but she never talked about why she was there or why she cried so much. "My boyfriend."

Carla smiled, "I didn't know you were with anyone. He wrote that for you?"

"Yes he did. I'm not with anyone. Lucky died in a fire eight months ago."

"And you are eight months pregnant with his child. Liz why do you never talk about this? You never talk about anything. Even how you know Sonny."

"I don't like to. It reminds me of him. I have to get to my appointment. I should be home soon."

Johnny opened the door, "Jason? Audrey Hardy and your sister are here."

"Send them in Johnny. Hey Em." He gave his sister a hug. She had been mad at him before for not telling her where Liz was but she had gotten over it. She was constantly bringing letters from Liz's friends and the people who loved her. Jason always sent them but Liz never wrote back. She hadn't even called anyone. "Hello Mrs. Hardy. What can I do for you?"

"Jason for three months I have stayed away like I was told my granddaughter wanted. I can't do it any more. Please tell me where she is."

Jason sighed. "I'm sorry Mrs. Hardy. I do what I can now. I send letters and I call and tell her that you all want her to call but I can't make her call you."

"Will you call her Jase? Please. Just so Mrs. Hardy can talk to her and know she is okay. I'll tell her it was my fault. I'll tell her I begged you."

"I will talk to her Emily. I will tell her the two of you are here and she can make up her mind weather or not to talk to you." Jason dialed the number. Someone answered. "Yes who's this?"

"Carla, who the hell is this?"

Jason heard someone yell in the background and another person came to the phone. "Maria?"

"Yes. Mr. Morgan?"

"Yeah hi."

"I am sorry about that. My sister is in a bad mood."

"Don't worry about it I have one of those too."

"Would you like to talk with Liz? She just got back from her appointment."

"Yes please put her on. Maria? How is she?"

"She does the same thing everyday. Mainly stays in her room. Her and my sister have become friends. Carla told me about Liz's boyfriend. Was he a friend of yours?"

"Yeah he was. I'll speak with Liz now."

Liz loved the calls from Jason, Carly, and Sonny. She asked them all kinds of questions about PC and everyone she loved there. Jason couldn't understand why she didn't just call them. He had explained to her so many times that the calls could not be traced. Liz herself wasn't sure why, she just didn't know what to say to them. She'd gotten so many letters from them all. Laura, Luke, Emily, Nikolas, Gram, even Bobbie. "Hello?"

"Hey Elizabeth."

"What's wrong?" she knew by his voice something was wrong.

"Your grandmother and Emily are here. I told them I would call but it would be up to you to talk. How was the appointment?"

"Great. The doctor still couldn't see what the sex was. I am so frustrated. Jason put Gram on okay?" Now that she knew Gram was right there she felt an urge to talk to her. When she came to the phone she said, "Hi Gram."

"Oh Elizabeth." Audrey started to cry. "How are you dear? When are you coming home?"

"I'm doing good Gram. I'm uh…Not ready to come home yet. I love you though. I promise I will call you."

"What about the baby? How will you take care of it?"

"I can take care of my child Gram. I'll be eighteen soon and I am going to get a job. Until then Sonny and Jason are helping me out. Tell Em I love her Gram I have to go." Elizabeth hung up and ran straight to her room. A few minutes later a knock sounded on the door. "Go away Carla."

She didn't listen but Liz knew she wouldn't. She came in and sat on the bed. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah I just haven't talked to her in so long and… I don't know."

"I say we put on some music and we talk." Before waiting for an answer Carla went over to a radio and turned it on. The song that came on was one of her favorites. She noticed Liz'' face and went to shut it off.

"No please leave it on." They sat on the bed listening to it.

Can this be true?
Tell me, can this be real?
How can I put into words what I feel?
My life was complete
I thought I was whole
Why do I feel like I'm losing control?

Never thought that love could feel like this
And you changed my world with just one kiss.
How can it be that right here with me
There's an angel?
It's a miracle

Your love is like a river
Peaceful and deep
Your soul is like a secret
That I never could keep
When I look into your eyes
I know that it's true
God must have spent
A little more time on you

Liz was crying by the end of the song. "Oh God Lucky." She fell into Carla's arms and Carla held her until she got it all out. Liz sat up. "I am so sorry."

"Don't be. Tell me about it? Why did that song make you cry?"

"That was our song. The last night we were together we had dinner with our friend Emily and his brother Nikolas. After they left we danced to this song. Then he walked me home, we talked awhile. When I went into my room he was on my roof. Lucky always did that. Climbed on my roof I mean. We talked a little bit more and I think I told him to go straight home to bed.

"Ok Goodnight." He answered.

"Goodnight. Hey Lucky?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

He came close to me and said, "you are so beautiful." Then he kissed me said, "I love you too sweetie" winked at me and left.

"A little while later he called."

"Did I wake you? Already?"

"Almost."

"What are you doing?"

"Aren't you supposed to be sleeping?"

"Well I am. I mean I'm in bed. But I'm not tired. I thought I'd read something real boring like my noted for the test tomorrow. Guess what I'm doing right now?"

"Reading your notes?"

"I'm lighting one of your candles. Guess why?"

"Cause I gave it to you."

"Because it's warm and smells good and lights up a room just like you."

"Lucky that's so sweet. Will you light another one for me?"

"Are you in dreamland?"

"I spent my whole day in dreamland."

"Me too. Elizabeth, go to sleep."

"Ok. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

"That is the last thing we ever said to each other."

"What happened?"

"I had a dream and it really scared me. When I woke up I had a really weird feeling so I called Lucky. The phone said the number was out of order so I got dressed and went there. His building was on fire. I tried to get to him to see him but this detective we know wouldn't let me. I kept saying it wasn't him. I knew he wasn't dead. I felt it. But I was wrong. Detective Taggert showed me a necklace that was on the body. It was Lucky's and he was gone. I fell to the ground and Sonny hugged me. I wanted to die." Liz pulled the subway token out of her shirt and showed it to Carla.

"Oh Liz this is terrible. I never knew any of this happened to you. So Lucky, he never knew about the baby?"

"Never. Thanks for listening Carla."

Lucky stared at her. Why was she here? How did she know? What did she have to do with any of this? "What is going on? Where is Faison?"

"Oh poor poor confused Lucky. Is eight months being locked away hard on you?"

"What do you have to do with this Helena?"

"My dear, this all of it was my plan. Faison was just my little helper. I don't need him anymore. Now I need you."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"All in good time my dear boy. Faison tortured you with bits and pieces of your love. I am going to use you, and when I'm done your dead."

"My father will kill you!"

"He will never know. You are already dead remember? And oh wait a memorial service. Would you like to watch it? Sure you would. We'll have dinner together in my room. With guards of course. You can see what your loved ones had o say about you. I felt for them as I watched it, of course they didn't know I was there but… Your father I must say seemed broken up the most. His eulogy was ever so tearful."

Lucky had tears coming down his face as she left the room laughing. How could they do this to him? He had to find a way out of here. Now more than ever.
