The Return - Chapter 10

As they neared the compound, Lucky began to get more and more nervous. This place held no pleasant memories for him and he did not treasure the idea of going back. “Turn here,” he gave directions to Mac. “Now there is one guard at this main gate. He’s the guy who brought me into town last night. I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing there are others posted around the perimeter.”

Mac pulled the unmarked police car to a stop. He radioed for the other cars to stop back where they couldn’t be seen and for the men to surround the area then wait for further instructions. He looked at Lucky. “You ready?”

Lucky swallowed and nodded, then put on the guard’s hat and glasses. Mac pulled up to the gate. Lucky jumped out of the car and walked over to the guard. “I’m back.” The guard came out, gun pulled. “I brought some friends along.” Lucky motioned to Mac. Mac, Taggert, and Garcia got out. “And oh, by the way, you won’t be needing that.” Lucky motioned at the gun. “Drop it.” Mac ordered. “Port Charles Police.” The guard looked around for a place to flee. “Don’t try it.” Mac said. “We’ve got the place surrounded. Your best bet is to cooperate.” The three officers walked up to the guard. Lucky picked up the gun, thinking it might come in handy. Taggert caught him though and made him give it to him.

“The place has all kinds of alarms,” Lucky reminded Mac.

“Why don’t we walk over and disarm all of that?” Mac motioned to the guard. The guard walked back to the guardhouse with Mac following. “Don’t forget anything. Now open the gate and let us in. Detective Garcia here will stay with you and keep you company.”

Garcia stepped up and handcuffed the guard. “You have the right to remain silent…”

Mac turned to the guard again. “How many other guards are around here?” The guard refused to answer. Mac radioed the other cops. “Move in guys! But be careful. Arrest anyone you find.” Mac, Taggert, and Lucky entered the compound. Lucky directed them to the building. He opened the door with the remote. They wound their way around until they found the control room. A monitor was on showing Lucky’s room. The guard he tied up had awoken and was flailing miserably.

There were several other monitors and lots of buttons. “Let’s see what these do.” Mac sat down and started trying different things. Suddenly other rooms came up on the monitors. In one there was a woman with long dark hair lying unconscious on a bed. “Anna!” screamed Mac. He furiously tried other buttons. Another monitor sprang to life. On this one there is a brown haired man, also unconscious on the bed. “Robert!” Mac turns to Taggert. That’s my brother and his wife. They’re in here somewhere. We’ve got to find them.” They walked up and down the halls, looking for rooms. Finally they found one and Lucky tried the remote. The door opened. There is Anna!

Mac runs over and checks her pulse. She is unconscious, but alive. Mac got on his radio. “Garcia, we need an ambulance out here, we’ve got two unconscious people in here. I also need three officers in here. Now.” Mac turned to Taggert. Stay here with her.

I’ve got to find Robert. He and Lucky continued their search. Finally they found another door.

Again the remote opened it up. Lying inside was Robert Scorpio! Again Mac checked his pulse. Alive but unconscious. What had Faison done to them?

Mac turned to Lucky. “I’ll stay here. You go back to the main door and direct the officers and ambulance when they get here. Send two of the officers to arrest your friend there and send the other one to me.”

The ambulance arrived to take Robert and Anna back to General Hospital. Mac decided to ride along with them. The guards had all been rounded up without incident. Taggert and Garcia had collected all their guns, cell phones, remote controls, etc. Garcia would oversee getting them booked into the PC jail.

That left Taggert and Lucky to drive back together. “I want to stop by the station for a minute and then I’ll take you out to Miss Webber,” Taggert was proud of the way Lucky had handled himself that day and wanted to show him by talking to him like an equal.

“OK,” Lucky noticed the change in Taggert’s voice, but felt obliged to still give him a little grief. “But make it fast, OK? Elizabeth is going to be worried and she comes first.” Taggert smiled at Lucky.

When they arrived at the station Dara was there and immediately descended upon Taggert. “And when did you intend to inform the DA’s office about this morning’s raid, Lieutenant?” Dara’s eyes flashed.

“Just hold on a minute. This is only a part of an on-going investigation. We had every intention of telling you when you needed to know.”

Dara pulled Taggert off to the side and spoke quietly. “This doesn’t strike me as something that you want Justice in the big middle of. If you don’t cooperate with me, then that is what will happen. Do you want that?” Just then Dara turned and noticed Lucky standing off to the side, still wearing the shades and hat and trying to look inconspicuous. “Is that one of the guys you arrested?”

“Keep your voice down!” Taggert barked. He decided he’d finished his work there and had better get Lucky out before he drew too much attention. “Come on,” he motioned to Dara. “I’ll explain in the car.”

“In the car?” Dara exclaimed. “Where are we going?”

“Do you want to be kept abreast of this investigation or not? Not keep your voice down and let’s go.” Taggert hissed at her. The three of them walked out to the car.
