AprilApril 26, 2000Election time is just around the corner on this 5 Flush episode of Felicity. Everyone vandalizes everyone else's campaigns. In one brilliant scene, we see the progress of one bulletin board being postered, repostered, and damaged by each of the candidates who are trying to advertise themselves. Nonetheless, the really dirty politics begin when Greg denies that his campaign manager is stealing Felicity's supplies. Ben and Felicity break into the manager's room and see that he has stolen all of her supplies. Ben gets so upset that he tells Richard about Greg's past with drugs. Richard lets everyone on campus know about Greg's problems. Felicity says that people should not vote against Greg because of his drug problems. Felicity asks Ben if he let it leak that Greg got arrested for cocaine use, and Ben says no. It's now the night of the elections, and Greg asks Felicity to go away to some cottage for the weekend. Felicity says that she is not ready to be so serious with Greg, but when Richard wins the presidency along with some random girl, and when Richard tells Felicity that Ben did tell him about Greg's drug use, then Felicity is ready to go with Greg to a cottage. The next morning, Ben finds out that Felicity went away so he goes after her. Also this week, Tracy and Elaine are enjoying their relationship. One night the two begin to make out in Elaine's apartment. However, before they can have sex Tracy leaves. The next day Elaine asks Tracy why he didn't stay. He responds that he will not have sex until he is married, because he does not want an unwanted pregnancy like the one which caused him to be born. Elaine says OK, but then says that she only wants to be friends with Tracy. He says OK, but then the two start to makeout. How many episodes until these two have sex? Ruby returns and tells Noel that she told her parents about the pregnancy. Her dad got drunk and her mom got upset, but she thinks they'll be OK. Julie tells Noel that Ruby should tell the father of the baby. Julie, who has become rather close to Noel these past two weeks, explains that as an adopted child she is scared to go see her father, because he does not know that she exists. Julie's' father never knew that he got a woman pregnant and that the daughter was adopted. Julie does not want Ruby's daughter to have to worry about confronting her father as Julie does. Noel tells this to Ruby, but she does not know what she will do. NEXT WEEK: Ben and Greg fight. Ben and Javier kiss. Sean confesses his love for Julie. Noel and Ruby get back together. April 19, 2000Sean's continuing documentary about Felicity lifted this 7 Flush episode of Felicity. The episode begins with Sean interviewing Felicity and Ben separately about their feelings for each other. Sean says that the Independent Film Channel wants more coverage of this love affair, but both deny that they have any love for each other. However, Sean doubts this fact. He follows Ben to a career counseling center. Ben gets a career aptitude test and learns that he should be either a stock broker, teacher, tour guide, or captain of a ship. Sean says that Ben is only trying to find a career to impress Felicity and be focused like Greg. Ben gets an internship as a stockbroker, but instead of learning the tricks of the trade, Ben baby-sits his boss's child, Steven. According to dad, Steven is a stiff kid who plays the piano, but Ben soon learns that Steven quit piano lessons a year ago only the dad never learned this fact because he so rarely sees his child (by the way, the dad and mom are divorced). Ben takes Steven to a basketball court, and Ben bonds with the boy over b-ball. Unfortunately, Steven hurts his finger. Ben takes Steven to the Student Health Center at NYU, and Greg treats the boy. Felicity sees how dedicated Ben is to children and is touched by his ability to care for them; this is the dedication that Felicity will find attractive. At the end of the episode, Ben returns Steven to his father, but tries to get a new internship at an afterschool program for children where he can maybe coach basketball. In the front of this episode, however, is student president elections. Greg is running for president of student council (Ben comments, "If you ever look in a student yearbook at the picture of the student council, they all look like Greg: stiff, earnest, losers."), and he asks Felicity to be his campaign manager. She agrees, but soon learns that she disagrees with his politics. Instead, Felicity supports Leila Foster, the girl that was denied the morning-after pill two episodes ago. At a presidential debate, Leila gets nervous and asks Felicity to deliver her speech for her. Felicity agrees and realizes that she likes the ability to make positive change. Felicity will now work for Leila, but Leila has decided to drop out of the race, because she cannot speak in public. Felicity is disheartened and decides to take over Leila's campaign and run for president, but now she is running against Greg. Greg is upset about this, but he still wants to date Felicity. Also running in this election is Richard Coe (the annoying resident from last year who last week was helping Sean with the documentary). Richard's platform is free pizza for students on Friday. Felicity wants to keep affirmative action policies at the university and allow students to chalk the sidewalks. Greg wants to ban affirmative action and chalking sidewalks. OOOHHH...the suspense. By the way, Meghan supports her crush, Greg and not her roommate. And also, I repeat my objection from two episodes ago: Felicity is no longer about a normal girl; the show is placing Felicity in a context outside of the normal college experience. Final story this week is the most important. There is a Sadie Hawkins dance at the school. Of course, no one really wants to go, but you know they will end up going anyway, even though in real life no one goes to official school-sponsored parties. Felicity plans to go with Greg, and Elaine plans to go with Tracy, but Julie is without a date. Elaine suggests she go with Noel, but Julie finds that idea preposterous until the two bond when Felicity gives Leila's campaign speech. (The two find it very amusing that Felicity speaks "as an Asian-American student." Leila is Asian-American, and Felicity reads Leila's script verbatim.) Anyway, the two go to the dance and are very cute...maybe future romance. More romantic, however, are Elaine and Tracy who have a back-and-forth banter. The two almost go to the dance and then almost don't, but then finally do and watching them dance together is so cute. The final couple conflict is, of course, Ben and Felicity. Ben goes to the dance with some random girl named Pam, and Felicity goes with no one because she is currently in a fight with Greg over her running for president. Pam is missing for a little at the dance so Ben and Felicity talk and bond; Ben thinks Felicity will be an excellent president. Unfortunately, Pam shows up, and she takes Ben to the dance floor. However, Greg soon shows up and apologizes for opposing Felicity's campaign. He says she will make a worthy opponent and hopes they can still date. They go on the dance floor as a slow song plays in the background. While they dance, Felicity sees Ben slow-dancing with Pam. Felicity and Ben make quick eye contact and then Ben turns his head away in shame. These two are moments from hooking up, and while this dance scene does not rival Kevin and Winnie at their dance on The Wonder Years, the separation that two people experience on the dance floor is truly painful.
QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Sometimes I want to kill you in your sleep. --Meghan to Felicity
April 12, 2000Although this 7 Flush episode of Felicity was enjoyable, I realize that nothing happened. If you missed the show and wanted to know what important facts you missed for next week, I would not have any to share. Actually, maybe there would be one or two: 1) officially, Noel and Ruby are no longer dating and 2) Felicity and Ben are done with their community service. How did these facts come about? Sean is making a sequel to the documentary he made last year. Apparently, the Independent Film Channel liked Sean's first video and wants to create a series to show a wholistic college experience. Sean picks up the camera and starts filming. One of the things he films is Felicity and Greg having a conversation about their kiss. Greg says now that she kissed him that he owes her one. They do not realize that this conversation is being recorded because Sean and Richard left the room even though they left the camcorder in the room. (By the way, Richard is helping Sean film the movie. Richard is the annoying resident from last year.) Well, Ben sees this footage and become insanely jealous. He is working a number of different jobs to complete his community service including a job at the admissions office. Ben goes through Greg's confidential admissions file and sees that Greg has been arrested for cocaine possession. Ben tells Greg that he knows about his past and will kill him if he hurts Felicity. Greg now thinks that Ben will tell Felicity about the drug thing so he tells her. Felicity understands Greg's problem and is not angry at him, but she does ask Ben how he found out about Greg's problem. Ben tells her. Felicity says that Ben's actions were wrong. Ben says that Felicity went through Ben's files last year so what is the difference. Felicity says that she was in love with Ben when she did that. Ben hides his face in shame, pauses for an awkward moment, and then says something like "Whatever, whatever. Look, I don't care what you think" and then runs away from Felicity. In the background of all of this, Felicity learns that a paying job has opened up at the health center. She asks Greg for the job and gets it. But her getting the job means that someone else with more experience will not get the job. Felicity thinks that she gets the job only because of her relationship with Greg. By the way, she and Greg go out on a dinner date. She quits. Greg gets upset that Felicity quit because he says she is the only thing that makes him happy at the health center. Felicity will become a volunteer at the health center now that her community service hours are over. At the end of the episode, Greg sees Felicity and kisses her and says that now they are even. This entire story line with Felicity's job is actually more complicated, but it is not worth explaining. I have provided plenty of details. Some other things this week include Noel losing some of his students's test papers only to be reunited with them. Elaine and Tracy are still dating although some tension will soon be created in their relationship. Julie is still searching for the perfect man. Sean is still in love with Julie. Finally, we learn that Megan became an RA because she lost a bet. NEXT WEEK: Ben and Felicity wonder about dating each other. April 5, 2000Felicity has done that which it said it would never do...become unreal. This week's show took on a political issue that a student like Felicity would never tackle and her student body would not support her decision as it did. Although her cause was good and she was right to protest, the issue progressed in an unrealistic manner which is why this episode only earns 7 Flushes. It all begins when a student named Leila Foster comes to the health office for the morning after pill. Felicity tries to get Leila an appointment for seeing a doctor until Greg informs Felicity that the health center is no longer allowed to prescribe the morning after pill. Felicity says that her friend received the pill last year, and Greg replies that the policy about banning the drug is brand new. Anyway, Felicity is upset and does not know what to do until she visits Dr. Pavone. Pavone advises Felicity to do something if she is upset. Felicity goes to Leila and asks her how she is doing. Leila says that she went to Planned Parenthood to get the pill; Felicity then asks Leila if she wants to start a sit-in at the health center to protest University policy. Leila says yes. The two head down to the health center and try to get people to come along with them. One of Felicity's advisees helps gather people who are not already at the health center. Greg begins to realize how serious this sit in is, and he gets angry at Felicity for staging it. Nonetheless, the situation grows and grows. Elena shows up as does Julie and Sean. Sean, by the way, is filming the sit in. Hundreds of students come. The kids end up sleeping over and a news story about the sit in appears in the New York Times. The next morning, Felicity, Greg, some professor, and Felicity's dad have a meeting. Felicity's dad tries to talk Felicity out of the sit in. He explains that Felicity is working at the health center as a punishment, and now she is in even more trouble. Felicity says that what she is doing is right. Greg steps up and says that Felicity is right. Felicity is very happy that Greg supports her. A television reporter comes to interview Felicity. The reporter, in a live telecast, asks Felicity why this issue about the morning after pill is so important. Felicity does not know how to answer that question so Julie steps up and answers that the pill provides security. Julie confesses on live TV that last year she was raped, and she felt reassured to know that she could take the pill and would not have to worry about having a baby as the result of her rape. Time passes and Greg gets a phone call. Felicity and he go into Greg's office to take the phone call. They are informed that Julie's confession pushed NYU administration over the line and the administration has decided to allow the health center to prescribe the pill. Felicity is so ecstatic that she kisses (and I mean kisses) Greg. They then announce the win to all of the students at the sit in. Yeah! What is the future of Greg and Felicity? Who knows, but Meghan found out about the kiss and is pissed. Also this week, Ben asks Noel for help in the class that Ben is taking and Noel is TAing. Noel agrees to help. The two go to Noel's apartment and study hard. They then start drinking beer and then play videogames. Noel is winning at the videogames which causes him to say, "Ohmygod. I'm kicking your ass which I've always wanted to do." Ben then gets up and throws a can of beer at Noel. The can hits Noel in the head. The two are wasted at this point, and Noel gets upset that Ben hit him. Ben says that Noel can hit him back. Noel punches Ben in the face which leads to a big fight. The next morning they both wake up and agree to never study together again. I think these two would make good friends.
