Notes
This story takes place after "Star Seed" (JLA SECRET FILES) and before the FINAL NIGHT crossover (Superman still has long hair).
Aquaman is mentioned but does not appear in this issue.
This issue holds the last appearance of the JLA Refuge and the villain Judgement. The other characters seen in the execution segment appear to be major Marvel villains, but are actually minor League villains.
All the fire producing superhumans have suddenly become sick - Ice Maiden seems surprisingly unconcerned about Fire (her best friend) and the President's Aid stated that the gender of Firehawk as male (most likely a mistake - Firehawk was Firestorm's old girlfriend).
JLA Trophies lost when the Refuge explodes: spirit jars, a giant hour glass, deadly playing cards, Kanjar Ro's Gamma Gong, the Bell, Wheel and Jar as used by the Demons Three (can be seen in the background debris).
Synopsis
Seemingly out of nowhere a giant UFO appears above the Whitehouse. Intercepted by Superman the crew introduce themselves as the Hyperclan and explain that they come from a world destroyed by environmental greed and profit. They have come to Earth to make sure that this does not happen here. Form the start the Hyperclan exhibit a far more pro-active approach by executing super-criminals and turning sections of the Sahara Desert into a garden of Eden. Superman and Protex argue the point of re-active versus pro-active in front of the world's media.
A mysterious force of six space suited aliens attacks and destroys the JLA Orbital Refuge. While Wonder Woman and Green Lantern battle the attackers Metamorpho pushes his powers to the limit to act as a living drop capsule for his team-mates. The crash landing renders him "inert" (effectively dead). The rest of the League meet up to discuss the problem and Batman reveals that he has detected a mind control signal of unknown origin - theorizing that they are facing a planned invasion the JLA declares war on the Hyperclan.
