Memories of my 1998's trip (1st. part) Memories of my 1998's trip (3rd.Part)

From Washington DC we went by car to the East part of the State of Pennsylvania, a beautiful place in the Appalachians called Shawnee-on-Delaware. As it name indicates this place is located next to the Delaware River, which marks the limit between the States. In the following map Shawnee-on-Delaware may be seen marked with a Red Cross, approximately 90-100 km apart from New York, to the East, and 120 km from Philadelphia, to the South.

The Complex of Shawnee-on-Delaware is really beautiful. From our house we saw the mountain, the Delaware River and a beautiful 18 hole Professional Golf Course, that was right in front of us. The days were cold, foretelling a significant snow storm that would arrive the day we were leaving. In the golf course of the Complex there were lots of big Canadian Geese that were walking around as if they were the owners of the land. At the bottom of the picture you can see the Complex Club House.

Within the Shawnee-on-Delaware zone, there were many rivers and water streams and we could find some waterfalls as pretty as the following one:

Since we were close to New York City, we went there one day after our arrival. In the photo we are traveling in the subway, hearing what my brother Horacio explains us. In the next photo we are visiting the Observatory of the Empire State Building (the one of the movie Sleepless in Seatle and so many others). The Vista from above is beautiful, everything seems so little 100 floors down... The cars in the streets seem like little toys and the people almost cann't be seen... The day was with some stormy clouds and  little visibility... The Hudson River separates Manhattan from New Jersey in the following photo.

We finally arrived in Philadelphia, the City where the United States was born in 1776. A beautiful City, where modern crystal buildings coexist side-by-side with the old ones. The City is a wonderful combination of historic buildings and the very modern and tall ones. It is recognized as the city in the United States with the greatest concentration of historic buildings in just one square mile.

In the following photo we see the Independence Hall building, the place where the independence of the United States was declared from England. In the photo I am standing next to the Statue of George Washington and a pair of meters in front of me are two commemorative plaques. One of these plaques remembers Abraham Lincoln when he stopped in that place, and the other one is in memory of John F. Kennedy, celebrating the day he pronounced the speech on the interdependence of the Nations in 1963. It was exciting to be standing exactly in the same place as these world famous men.

The photo of the right shows the room where the 13 month debate on Independence affairs was held. All the congressmen had assigned seats in the room. Benjamin Franklin, the greatest hero of the City, was seated in the chair that is seen in the left of the photo.

One of the objects of greatest popular veneration in Philadelphia and in all the United States, is the famous Liberty Bell, that rests today in a crystal building opposite to the Independence Hall. The Bell sang from the Independence Hall in all the important events of the new Country. It has been many years since a one meter long crack appeared, that impaired its further use.

We visited many other places in this beautiful City that really enchanted us. It could mean that we wish to come back in the future...

We were expecting to meet on any corner Tom Hanks or Bruce Springsteen. Or, we thought, we would hear the beautiful songs of the Philadelphia film, everywhere across the city, but it wasn't that way. What sounds loudly in the Down Town area is Rap music... Nevertheless and just in case, we closely watched one building . . . a Local Court of Justice.

And with a last look at the beautiful Vista of a branch of the Delaware River, within the Shawnee-on-Delaware Complex, we left the State of Pennsylvania. Traveling by car to New Hampshire, our last stop in our 1998 travel route. Are you still with us? We appreciate it very much!!
