Memories of my 1998's trip (2a. Part)

We drove towards the North-East, until reaching the heart of the State of New Hampshire. Laconia, a very pretty place in the zone of lakes of the State. We are about 100 km North from Boston, which is located in the State of Massachusetts. As we followed our trip towards the Northeast, the temperature was getting colder and the snow showed. From Washington DC to Laconia the temperature lowered some 10 Celsius degrees and the snow grew up to 20-25 cm.

The well-known region of New England is formed by six States, in the Northeast of the Country. Massachussetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The greatest one is Maine, the one of the snow storm disasters at the very end of December 1997. The small State is Rhode Island, to the South of Massachusetts.

The next day we went to Boston, to visit this beautiful city, which is the seventh more visited City in the World. You may see something similar to the City of Philadelphia, coexisting the new buildings with the old ones, the last with a great historic value. In the photo of the right, we are stopped next to the building of the Legislature, in the exact place of " the Massacre of Boston ", that was a key point in the fight of the Independence against the English. In 1770, the English troops killed 5 men, which originates a great local disguise.

We also visited some others historics places, to learn more of these important events for the origin of the U.S.A.. But we leave them for a while, to show my picture in front of the South Market. We were needing of something to remember our stay in Boston, otherwise we could forget it very easily. Don't you agree?

We were staying at the Summit At The Four Seasons in Laconia. It was a very pretty place, with hills, forests and 20 cm. of snow. We can see here two photos of the environs. The lakes were almost completely frozen. The photo of the left one shows the access road to the Complex, that snakes about 500 meters of route.

In the center of New Hampshire's State there is a very great mountainous zone, that occupied a third of the total surface of the State. It is a national park that is called White Mountain National Forest. These are a great assembly of mountains of the North end of the Appalachians. At the middle of the National Park there is a way that crosses the mountains in the East-West direction. It is called the Kancamagus Highway, in honor of one of the local Indian Chiefs who helped to obtain the peace and end the war. Nevertheless, they were almost exterminated afterwords, but this one passed to history.

The Kancamagus way is really beautiful, the sky was very clear and blue. The outside temperature was really cold, but we enjoyed it a lot.

The next day we went again to Boston, to learn and to know a little bit more of this beautiful City. The external temperature was very cold (-10 degrees Celcius), that we had to start with a second breakfast to obtain forces to walk through the City. We are enjoying the Hard Rock Cafe of Boston in the following photo. We went to an Observation Deck in a Tower 55 floors high, with as exceptionally beautiful view of the City and its surroundings, since it was a very clear day. We hear than the maximum visibility was some 100 km. (60 miles). Almost the distance to Laconia, NH, but we couldn't find it...

We visited some places but let me recall in one of them. The Computer Museum, with a giant computer, two floors high, that it separated in all main components, that you can learn with them while playing. It was really amusing and very instructive.

We were there at two o'clock, the Commercial buildings looked as seen in the photo of the left and when we left, the day was gone, the same buildings looked as the right photo. The Computer Museum deserved this extended visit, believe me.

And this is the very end of the travel we did in 1998, during our Summer vacations! (during a cold Winter in the North Hemisphere). We enjoyed a lot, knew beautiful places that all of them deserves another visit, we learned some of the North American history, which was offered very kindly and enthusiastically by the excellent Tourist Guides in each of the historic place we visited, being always prepared to do their work with pride. A unforgetable experience and memories, that I hope you have shared and enjoyed so much as we did. See you soon!.
