Pittsburgh Steelers History The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded on July 8, 1933 by Arthur Rooney. Originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1933 - 1940. In 1941- 42 the named was changed to Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1943 both PA teams merged to create the Pittsburgh Steagles, this lasted one season,and in 1944 Pittsburgh merged with Chicago. In 1945 the name was changed back to the Pittsburgh Steelers ,representing the heritage of Pittsburgh.The name Steelers is still being used today,and represents the Steel tradition in Pittsburgh.Not the biggest or richest NFL city, but with its blue collar fans is still one of the hardest NFL Teams to get tickets for. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the fifth oldest franchise in the NFL. they were a member of the Eastern Division of the ten-team NFL.The other four current NFL teams in existence at that time were the Chicago(Arizona)Cardinals, GreenBay Packers, Chicago Bears, New York Giants. One of the great sports pioneers of his time, Art Rooney passed away on August 25 1988 following a stroke at the age of 87. "The Chief" as he was affectionately known,is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is remembered as one of Pittsburgh's greatest citizens.
