Who ARE the Pet Shop Boys?

Okay, since this site is dedicated to LINKING Pet Shop Boys sites, perhaps it should also be dedicated to the lost person who accidentally came here =) Any information in quotes is from the Official Pet Shop Boys Website @ Parlophone Records. If you want the latest news, info, and other PSB stuff, go there =)

The Pet Shop Boys is a British group consisting of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe.

"On August 19th, 1981, Neil and Chris met by chance in an electronics shop on the Kings Road. Realizing they had a common interest in dance music, they began to write together. To begin with they called themselves West End; later they came up with the name Pet Shop Boys, a name derived from some friends who worked in a pet shop in Ealing."

In 1983,"... Neil is sent to New York by Smash Hits [the company he worked for prior to meeting Chris] to interview The Police. By this time the Pet Shop Boys were obsessed by a stream of hi-energy records made by New York producer Bobby Orlando, known as Bobby O'. 'I thought well, if I've got to go and see The Police play then I'm also going to have lunch with Bobby O' ' [says Neil]. They shared a cheeseburger and carrot cake at a restaurant called The Apple Jack on August 19th (two years to the day since Neil and Chris had met) and Bobby O', flattered by Neil's compliments, suggests making a record with the Pet Shop Boys."

In October 1984, the Pet Shop Boys "... made their first ever stage appearance at the Fridge Nightclub in Brixton, singing and playing over tapes." They signed on to Parlophone Records in March of 1985, and Neil left Smash Hits in April of that same year, despite his belief that his new pop group The Pet Shop Boys were going to fail within a matter of weeks. On July 1, Opportunities was released in the UK, making it to #116 on the charts. Their first #1 hit came with West End Girls in October, and the song had subsequently become #1 in many other countries.

In February 1987, the PSB had recieved "... the Best Single award for 'West End Girls' at the BPI Awards. ' It's a bit like the school prize giving day, isn't it? ' , muttered Neil who turned up to receive the award from Boy George. Chris stayed at home and watched it on TV." They also recieved the Best International Hit award for 'West End Girls' at the Ivor Novello Awards in May 1985.

It was in November 1987 when "... the Pet Shop Boys spend three weeks in Clacton and South London shooting 'It Couldn't Happen Here'. What had originally been conceived as an hour-long video based around the 'Actually' LP, turned into a full-scale feature film to be released cinematically, directed by Jack Bond and co-starring Barbra Windsor, Joss Ackland and Gareth Hunt. ' We just do what we normally do in videos ', explained Chris, ' walk around, me a few paces behind Neil...'.

At the BPI Awards, the Pet Shop Boys win the Best Group award in February 1988, and for the second year in a row, they win the the Best International Hit award at the Ivor Novello Awards, this time for It's a Sin. The PSB start their first tour in 1989, "... visiting Hong Kong, Japan and Britain, playing 14 dates in all." The PSB make their first public live appearance in America in August of 1990, guesting with Electronic at the LA Dodgers Stadium. Later that year, in Los Angeles at the Mayan Theatre, "... [they] play their first American concert using a collection of performers (Casper and Hugo Huizar dancing, Dominic Clarke playing keyboards and operating the computer equipment, and two backing singers) with whom they had appeared the previous day on the Arsenio Hall Show." March 1991 brought about their second tour, Performance travelling worldwide.

"On February 14th [1994], the Pet Shop Boys appear at the Brit Awards, performing 'Go West' ... backed by a Welsh choir..." In June, "...the first ever mix the Pet Shop Boys have done of another artist's record - Blur's 'Girls and Boys' - is released." The Pet Shop Boys begin their next tour, Discovery on October 26th in Singapore. It lasts 6 weeks.

    About PSB Ringually

Pet Shop Boys Ringually was established, according to Webring, in December 1996, as the internet's first Pet Shop Boys-related webrings. It didn't really grow until I actually did something with it in 1998, and, I'm proud to say, has become one of the largest PSB webrings online. Back in 1997, it was known as PSB Bi-Ringual, but had it's name changed to Pet Shop Boys Ringually in 2000 because I didn't like the name... =Þ The webring's initial goal is to link the world's best and most original Pet Shop Boys websites in an effort to create a website where fans of the Pet Shop Boys can go to one site and from there find an updated link page to a variety of websites pertaining to the Pet Shop Boys. It is an internationally-friendly webring, in which you will find varying sites from many countries and languages from around the world. Not only will you gather information about PSB fandom, BUT you can also learn about other countries and cultures as well!

    About the Maintainer

Pet Shop Boys Ringually is maintained by 21-year-old Canadian PSB fan, Stephanie Ratté (that would be me). I live in the province of Ontario with my sister, Jessica, my parents, and my dog, Shadow. I have been working at WalMart for almost 2 years and will be attending college in September 2002. I enjoy drawing and writing, sequencing music (ie. MIDI's), listening to music (Pet Shop Boys, of course =)) and biking.

I first got into the PSB in 1995 when I heard their CD, Very. My dad had gotten it because he liked the song Go West, but he gave me the CD because I enjoyed the style of the music, which is probably what influenced my favourite style of music today, trancedance and disco/dance. Ever since I got the CD, I have been an avid PSB fan =)

Now, some of my fav PSB things =) My favourite PSB song is the Ab Fab/IWNDTKOT (Beatmasters Extended Nude RMX) from Disco 2. I LOVE the tune like mad (you should see me when I drive with it blaring...). I also like Paninaro and It's a Sin. My favourite albums so far are Very, Disco 2, and the Discography. My favourite Pet Shop Boy...? I don't know... They are both VERY talented people, and I cannot favour either/or.

Some other things I like... I like to work on my webpage, and, as mentioned above, I also sequence MIDI's, draw, and write. I am a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, as well as a Red Dwarf obsessee =) Wee! I also LOVE cartoons!! My favourites include CyberSix, Digimon, Ned's Newt, Freakazoid!, yadda yadda... =) Other musical talents I like other than the Pet Shop Boys are Eiffel 65, Aqua, New Order, Dune, Robert Miles, DJ Dado, the Boomtang Boys, and some others I can't think of right now... My favourite actors are David Duchovny (droooooool....), Jim Carrey, and Freddie Prinze Jr. (DROOOOOOOOL.....). My favourite styles of music include eurodance, trance, techno... any sort of electronica music and all those upbeat styles my parents don't like. =)

Hmm... well... I think I FINALLY ran out of things to say... yup. Mmm hmm. Kay.
