Tenchi Muyo in Love begins in the Masaki house with Tenchi and company watching an old film that his dad, Nobuyuki, made when he was still in high school. This is the first glimpse of Achika, Tenchi's mom, that we get. While watching, one learns the character of Achika through the words of Sasami. Words such as "gentle" shows the viewer what they can expect from Achika. Also during the beginning of this film, you see the usual fighting between Ryoko and Aeka. This time it's about cookies. Go figure. Well, while watching the film, Achika disappears from the movie, and suddenly we see that Tenchi starts to disappear. If not for the quick thinking of the "greatest scientist in the universe" Washu, Tenchi would have disappeared for good. Luckily for Tenchi, Washu has put a shield around Tenchi to protect him from whatever has happened. Washu explains to Tenchi and company that something has happened to Tenchi's mom, Achika in the past. To be precise, in 1970. She proves it to everyone by showing the movie film to them. The viewer can see that from frame to frame, Achika is slowly disappearing until she is not there anymore. There is then a huge dialogue about what will happen if nothing is done about the problem, and to make a long story short, if Tenchi and company do not go back to 1970 and repair whatever has happened to Achika, then everyone will fade away in the future. So the Tenchi gang decide to use Washu's version of a time machine to go back in time. Some hilarious dialogue goes on and then they are teleported to the high school where Nobuyuki and Achika went. The year is 1970.
When they arrive, Washu is quite surprised that her invention actually worked. She tells everyone that if she made a mistake in the coordinates then everyone would be stuck in time/space forever. That didn't make Ryoko too happy, you can be sure. After this dialogue, Tenchi and company infiltrate the school by impersonating different roles in the high school. Ryoko and Aeka are students, Kiyone is a janitor, Mihoshi is a teacher, and Sasami and Tenchi hide and watch from a distance. There is a lot of comedy that takes place as Ryoko and Aeka fight at school ( what else is new?), Mihoshi tries to teach the one "Earth" lesson she knows to the class only to be interrupted by Nobuyuki telling her that they already heard the story. She panics while Kiyone is watching from outside the door. You can guess what is going through Kiyone's mind right now. Ha, ha. Well something important comes up when Ryoko and Aeka are in the lunch room. They start another one of their fights, but this time Ryoko spots someone "eyeing" Achika. When the mysterious person sees that Ryoko is watching him, he stealthly leaves the lunch room. Ryoko catches the myterious person eyeing Achika again in the classroom, and starts to keep a close eye on him.
Well before I go on with this synopsis, you probably want to know a little about Achika and Nobuyuki in the past since I haven't mentioned them a lot yet. Well, you can honestly see the love that Achika has for Nobuyuki and vice versa even though it seems that Nobuyuki is shy. Achika laughs when Nobuyuki starts to yawn which embarrasses Nobuyuki. She also is always very nice to Nobuyuki. Also during one of the days before the school trip to Tokyo, we see Nobuyuki and Achika on a little cliff talking. Achika sees that Nobuyuki is drawing something and decides to take a look at it, much to the demise of Nobuyuki. When Achika asks Nobuyuki what it is, then he replys that it is a house that he wants to build. His "dream house" or so he calls. This comes to be very important so while you continue to read this synopsis, then make sure to keep this is mind. This also explains the origin of the Masaki house of the future. Next time you watch an OAV episode or TV series, look at the Masaki house. Then look at Nobuyuki's drawing in TMiL. You will then see the resemblence between the two. There will be more incidents where the two's closeness are shown but that comes later in this synopsis.
Now getting back with the movie, we can see that Ryoko and Aeka have decided to stay at the Masaki residence (the 1970 one) much to the surprise of Achika. Achika is about ready for dinner when suddenly Mihoshi knocks on the door and tells everyone that she is conducting a "home visit?" " No one conducts homes visits at this hour," says Tenchi because it is really late at night. Luckily for everyone, no one notices this wierd event and Mihoshi is able to enter the house, talk, and have dinner with Ryoko, Aeka, Achika, and Yosho. That night, Kiyone is taking a bath only to be teleported by Washu to her lab. She is confused at first, but after awhile starts to help Washu learn more about KAIN. Washu and Kiyone look up KAIN's file in the Galaxy Police Archives and finds next to nothing about him. All they know is that he has destroyed numerous planets and that he was trapped into subspace 100 years ago by a joint cooperation of the Galaxy Police and the House of Jurai. This part of the movie is the first clue on why KAIN might have gone back to Earth.
Well, that night, Tenchi and gang learn that the high school senior class will be going on a class trip to Tokyo. Washu tells them that the incident will happen in the next three days so that means during the class trip. So the next day, Tenchi and company and the senior class go on a bullet train to Tokyo. Unfortunately for everyone, Ryoko and Aeka get into another fight. This wasn't just any fight though. Ryoko and Aeka, through their fight, knocked out the power from the bullet train. This caused everyone to arrive at night time instead of earlier. When Tenchi and company sneak off the train...( who wouldn't after what just happened?) Ryoko and Aeka ask each other who was going to watch over Achika. Unfortunately for both of them, they knew the answer would be "Ryoko and Aeka."
Well the next morning, you see Nobuyuki and Achika talking and having a good time while Aeka and Ryoko are very grumpy. You see a lot of different parts of Tokyo on this day. You also see the mysterious person that was eyeing Achika at school earlier in the movie. Who is this person and what does he want? Well, at night, while Achika and Nobuyuki are talking, the mysterious person goes to them and seems like he wants to say something. But Ryoko sees him and he suddenly starts to walk away. Ryoko asks Achika and Nobuyuki what the person wanted, but Achika replied that he said nothing. Ryoko decides to follow the mysterious person until she gets to a place where there is no one in sight. Or so believes, until the mysterious person puts his hand on Ryoko's back and tells her to put her hands behind her back. The mysterious person's hand can fire bullets if you are wondering why he would put it on Ryoko's back. Well, here is where we find out who this person is. We now know that he is part of the Galaxy Police "Special Forces" in charge of serious criminals. He is very familiar with Ryoko and even knows Ryoko by her Galaxy Police number. Ryoko starts to ask the Galaxy Police man what he is doing here watching Achika. He expains himself, but right after he tells everything Ryoko needs to know, Ryoko escapes. The Galaxy Police man tells Ryoko that once he is done with KAIN, then he will be back for her. Finally to end this night, two things happen. The first thing is that Achika falls and feels dizzy for no reason at all. This is also triggered by the sudden dematerializing of Tenchi. Luckily Sasami is there with the shield. The last event before this night is over is the return of Kiyone to 1970 and more of an explanation by Washu about KAIN. The viewer learns that Washu has found out that KAIN will materialize near a "transmittor." When Tenchi looks at a map, he sees that Washu means the Tokyo Tower. The important thing about this is that the senior class is going to the Tokyo Tower tomorrow, which means that KAIN will be there. When Tenchi and company asks what they need to do to put Kain back into subspace, Washu tells them that there is no one who can yield the energy necessary to put KAIN back into subspace. Like always though, Washu has an invention that will help Tenchi defeat KAIN. Since there is no one who could yield that much Jurai power, Washu has made an instant Jurai power source that works on Earth. The thing is that it only works for 10 minutes. Kiyone explains to everyone that the power generators that Washu made have to put on certain parts of the map or what Tenchi calls the "Fudo Temples." The main generator needs to go in the middle of the observation tower in Tokyo Tower. We find out that during this conversation that Tenchi has decided to watch over Achika. Then this day ends.....
The next day, Tenchi is with the school group while everyone else is putting the power generators on the specific coordinates that Washu gave the night before. When Tenchi, Achika, and Nobuyuki are in the elevator going to the observation deck of Tokyo Tower, KAIN materializes and asks who owns the Jurai power. Before anyone could answer, the Galaxy Police special agent starts to shoot at KAIN. KAIN goes up to meet the nuisance and we see the Galaxy Police agent struggle for his life. While this is happening, Tenchi, Achika, and Nobuyuki go up the stairs and to the observation deck. Once there, Tenchi starts to look for the middle of the tower so he can place the main generator there. Suddenly, KAIN appears. Tenchi tells Nobuyuki to place the generator in the middle instead so he could defend both of them. Nobuyuki does what Tenchi tells him. After a little bit of fighting, Tenchi tells Nobuyuki to press the red button on the main generator. This starts the Jurai power and starts to suck KAIN into subspace. Unfortunately, he grabs Achika and trys to pull her into subspace also. There is a deep struggle as Nobuyuki and Tenchi try to make sure that Achika doesn't get pulled in, but in the end, both Nobuyuki and Achika gets pulled into subspace with KAIN.
After this event, Tenchi is very distraught and asks Washu to please do something to bring back Achika and Nobuyuki. Washu decides to use Tenchi's brainwaves as a homing devise for Ryoko to teleport to when Tenchi finds where Achika is. Meanwhile, Nobuyuki is being held in one hand by KAIN ready to be dropped while Achika is watching. Then you hear the words I told you not to forget earlier in the synopsis. " You promised that you would come visit when I made the house." Yes, that scene back earlier in the movie. Well, after KAIN drops Nobuyuki to the ground and he is hurting, Achika has seen enough and goes to her Juraian's suit. Then she tells KAIN, " That forgiveness, for a person like you, can never be an option." Now those are strong words. At this time, the viewer sees Tenchi as a little baby in what seems like a dream. But in reality, this is the Juraian power showing Achika that the boy that has tried to hide from her at school and protect her at the Tokyo Tower is her son Tenchi. With this in mind, KAIN starts to attack Achika and a battle ensues. When KAIN sees that he can not defeat Achika, he decides to "absorb" her. Achika resists but then sees Nobuyuki being pulled in. She tries to rescue him but can't reach him. Right before Nobuyuki gets pulled in, Tenchi Aeka, and Ryoko come and Tenchi slices KAIN with the Tenchi Sword. KAIN gets angry and starts to attack everyone. Achika comes to the rescue and gets the Tenchi Sword and it responds to her. Achika uses the Tenchi Sword to defeat KAIN or so everyone thinks. When everyone is about to leave so Kiyone can use the Dimensional Cannon to destroy that part of subspace, KAIN meterializes again and grabs Achika's hair. Kiyone fires the Dimensional Cannon and destroys KAIN once and for all.
When everyone returns to Earth, Kiyone tells them that everything worked out fine and that Mihoshi and Sasami are already back in the future. Then she disappears and is teleported back to the present. As for the rest, Achika and Nobuyuki are fine, Tenchi is exhausted, and Ryoko and Aeka are there ready to put a device on Nobuyuki and Achika. Before they put the device on Achika and Nobuyuki, Achika tells both of them to make sure to take care of Tenchi for her. She knows that when Tenchi needs her most, she will not be there for him. She also tells them that both Nobuyuki and herself will live life to the fullest. With that, Aeka puts the devices on both Nobuyuki and Achika so they will not remember anything that has just happened and not cause a time paradox.
At the end of the movie, the viewer can see what happened with Achika and Nobuyuki the next couple of years. We hear that Nobuyuki has decided to go into architecture and will build the dream house that both Achika and himself envisioned. Also we see both Nobuyuki and Yosho talking on what the name of the new baby will be. Yosho decides the name will be "Tenchi" and that is where the name came from. Following this, we see Achika singing a song to little Tenchi as he goes to sleep.
Forward now to the present. Nobuyuki is taking a video of everyone, but the narration is about Nobuyuki and Achika and how their "dream" is still alive. This ends the movie and this synopsis. After this, a great song called "Alchemy of Love" comes up during the credits. It's a great song if you can get a hold of it. I will try to get the video of it up soon. Thanks for reading.
