Area 88, by Kaoru Shintani, was a late 70s, early 80s manga, TV, and OAV series about tragic hero, Shin Kazama. A young man who through sheer luck was on his way to a comfertable job as a pilot for Yamato Airlines and the arms of his beloved Ryoko, he's duped by his supposed best friend, Satoru Kanzaki, into signing a document which now legally binds him into the service of the Asranny Mercenary Airforce at Area 88. Forced away from his wonderful life into nightmare, Shin has no choice but to either spend three years in the service or buy his way out by making $1.5 Million dollars from his daily sorties. Turned into a fighter pilot and thrown into a war he did not want to be in, Shin wishes nothing other then swift revenge on Kanzaki and to return home to Japan. However, things are not that bad for Shin. Despite his depressed mood, and despite the manga's own description of Area 88's pilots being devils of any sort, Shin's soon finds many friends in the ranks of Area 88's pilots and personnel. Even the scheming money grubbing McCoy turns out to have a heart and helps Shin out when he can. Of course, with the war escalating and Kanzaki's attempts at taking over YAL and Ryoko's heart (or body, at least), what will happen to Shin? THAT is the story of Area 88. The story Shin Kazama (also the story of Mick Simon, Rocky, Saki Veshutal, etc, etc.).
