The Robotech/Macross Episode Guide

Here's the list of episodes, both animated and manganized, that make up the Macross Saga. Links marked with an M mean that is was a manga or comic episode. Links with a TV denote that the episode aired on TV.

Tigercat Prototype 001 [M]

This flashback to the early days of Veritech development is primarily a comical look at the relationship between Lisa Hayes and Roy Fokker. However, as far as the story goes, Roy's old flight instructor Focke, has joined up with an anti-government group which whishes to dethrone the RDF. To make matters worse, he's ALSO pilotting an experimental Fighter-Guardian just like Roy and his squadron. And to add to that, he, for reasons as yet unknown, wants a death duel with Roy. This series stretches seven issues and then is continued in Variants.

Variants Prototype 001 [M]

Continues where Tigercat left of, Focke reveals to Roy that he wants to fight him because he holds him responsible for the death of his daughter, Anastasia. He then shoots a missle at Roy's Fighter-Guardian hitting right where Lisa sits. In an instant, Lisa finds herself in an alternate future where she commands SDF-2, is married to Karl Riber, and the RDF is fighting a second war against the Zentraedi. So far this series is 2 issues.

Boobytrap [TV]

In the year 2009, ten years after the crash of SDF-1, the mighty starship is ready for take off, however, the Zentraedi have plans to crash the Launching Day Ceremonies.

Countdown [TV]

After finding out the secret of the Veritechs, Rick, with Roy's help, learns to fly his Veritech and uses it to save Minmei from the Zentraedi. However, Rick and Minmei soon have a Close Encounter of the WORST kind when they finally see a Zentraedi. Meanwhile, Gloval and crew attempt at getting SDF-1 airborne.

Space Fold [TV]

Under attack by the Zentraedi fleet, Captain Gloval makes the decision to fold SDF-1 to the dark side of the moon. However, the process back fires sending SDF-1 and Macross Island to the orbit of Pluto and to make matters worse, Rick and Minmei become trapped below decks.

The Long Wait [TV]

Trapped somewhere on SDF-1, Rick and Minmei try and make the best of their situation as they try to find a way out. Unfortunately, their each of their hopes are dashed as both attempts to escape fail and food dwindles. They spend two weeks together until they are finally rescued.

Transformation [TV]

As SDF-1 slowly makes its way back to Earth, Captain Gloval is informed that with the Fold Drives gone, the ship can only fire its Main Gun by undergoing a Modular Transformation. At first, Gloval, is opposed to the idea but when the Zentraedi turn up the heat, he has no choice but to transform the ship in order to fight back. Meanwhile, Rick and Minmei argue about their relationship.

Covert Ops [M]

While on course towards Saturn, SDF-1 receives a priority signal from one of its scout ships (a VE-1 Elint Seeker AKA a Super Veritech outfitted with Cat's Eye equipment) that a Zentraedi base is hidden on Saturn's fourth moon of Pandora. In reaction to this news, Captain Gloval sends Roy, Rick, Max, and several others on a mission to take out the base. Meanwhile, there's friction between Rick, Minmei, Lisa, Claudia, and Roy as the mission date nears and Khyron is sent to the Zentraedi base against Buran's wishes. And to make matters worse, the pilots of the VE-1 face death at the hands of the Zentraedi. On another note, this manga is interesting in that it's done almost COMPLETELY in the art style of Macross: DYRL. From character to mecha designs, everything is DYRLish, except that the Zentraedi still LOOK like the TV Zentraedi and the Daedalus and Prometheus are still attached to SDF-1, though the Prometheus has been modified with the Super Veritech Launch Claws from DYRL. This series is 1 issue and still going.

Blitzkrieg [TV]

As SDF-1 approaches Saturn, Captain Gloval begins to put together an attack plan to ambush and defeat the Zentraedi in an attempt to get them off their tail. During the unsuing battle, Lisa invents the Daedalus Manuever and uses the new tactic to destroy an entire Zentraedi ship and thus defeating the Zentraedi forces for the time being. Also, the Pin-Point Barrier System is developed and tested though while integral to the Daedalus Manuever, it's found that the Main Gun will not fire with the Barrier System On. Meanwhile, Rick becomes a pilot of the RDF and the battle of this episode is Rick's first mission.

Megastorm [M]

While in orbit around Jupiter, all seems well as the Zentraedi have stopped attacking. During this quiet time, rookies are sent on patrol (including Max Sterling), a prototype of the experimental Super Veritech Attachment System is tested on Roy's VF-1S, and Captain Gloval shows off his cooking skills. However, on the Zentraedi side, Commander Kohrah of the Elite Zentraedi Forces is brought in and charged with the mission of capturing SDF-1. Utilizing unique technology used ONLY by Kohrah's forces, the Zentraedi manage to trap SDF-1 in a gravity well. And to make matters worse, their only hope for escape, the Gravity Control System is targetted by Kohrah and his men and the only thing standing in his way is Max and Roy. After a fierce battle, Max and Roy succeed and destroy Kohrah's forces just in time to catapult SDF-1 to safety and closer to Mars.

Bye-Bye, Mars [TV]

As SDF-1 approaches Mars, it receives a strange signal from the abandoned base, Sara, on Mars. Hoping to find her fiancee Karl Riber still alive, Lisa suggests that SDF-1 investigates. Upon setting down on Mars, Lisa goes in to check out the base. However, it is not long before it becomes clear that the signal was a trap and SDF-1 is trapped by Gravity Mines as Khyron's forces press on and wear down her resistance. To save the ship, Lisa is ordered to activate the base's Reflex Furnace and set it to Overdrive in order to make it explode and destroy the mines holding SDF-1 on the planet. However, after activating the furnace, Lisa finds Riber's quarters and decides to stay and die at the base. Rick is sent in to rescue her against her protests. In the end, SDF-1 takes off and Khyron's forces are left in shambles by the bases explosions.

Sweet Sixteen [TV]

It's Minmei's 16th birthday and Rick can't figure out what to give her. To make matters worse, he gets a medal, promoted, has to leave the party for battle (not to mention Minmei's lack of amusement at Rick not getting her a present), AND getting Ben and Max assigned to him. This episode would do better to be titled, "A Bad Day In The Life Of Rick Hunter."

Miss Macross [TV]

Rick's troubles with Minmei only swell as Mayor Luan enters Minmei into the Miss Macross pagaent. To make matters worse, Rick can't watch the contest live as he must fly out to intercept a Zentraedi Recon ship which has strayed far too close to SDF-1. And if things couldn't get any worse, Minmei wins the contest, thus putting Rick's worst fears about his releationship with her into high gear.

Blind Game [TV]

As SDF-1 nears Earth, they are ordered by Headquarters to leave in order to keep the Zentraedi away from Earth. While SDF-1 is forced to hide in the Asteroid Belt, Breetai attempts to contact SDF-1 and ask for a surrender followed by a warning shot from Breetai's fleet. During the attack, Khyron decides to go against orders and fire on SDF-1 destroying its Sensor Array forcing Gloval to send out a Cat's Eye with Lisa aboard. Rick's new Vermillion Squadron is assigned to protect Lisa's Cat's Eye, however, when Lisa finds Breetai's Command ship, her Cat's Eye is disabled by an asteroid and her pilot killed. Her ship is captured by the Zentraedi and Rick, Ben, and Max attempt to save her.

First Contact [TV]

Rick, Ben, and Max try to rescue Lisa from Breetai's Command ship but instead end up getting captured themselves. Breetai's ship folds to Dolza's Fortress to present Lisa, Rick, and Ben to him for an interrorgation (Max wasn't actually captured, he gets sucked out into space, gets back into the ship, and mugs a Zentraedi for his clothes).

Robotech/Macross Fact

In an early episode of the Studio Nue series, Super Dimension Century Orguss, this peculiar cameo by Lisa Hayes appeared for a second in a Chirum Ishkick cockpit. The photo has been censored as per GeoCities' nudity policies. Thanks to Mark Stout for supplying the data on this.
