These are the trains that run from major cities to other cities or country centres. They usually provide a limited number of stops and many amenities such as private compartments, food counters or table service, or first class seats with individual video screens.

'251' Series Super View Odoriko Express run by JR East from Tokyo to the Izo Peninsula.

'883' Series Sonic Express run by JR Kyushu from Hakata to Oita.

'10000' Series HiSE Romance Express run by the Odakyu Electric Railway from Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto, a popular tourist and honeymoon destination. It is an 11-car articulated EMU.
