Tokyo's first subway was opened in 1927 and now Japanese Railways (and some private companies) in most major cities provide one of the most punctual, efficient and safe subway systems in the world. In Tokyo alone, patronage averages 10 million commuters PER DAY! Unfortunately, another statistic is that during peak hour, cars can be filled to 240% capacity. Not all subways lines are completely underground, with nearly 20% of lines on the surface. Subway cars that go underground, by law, must have connecting doors in the driving cabs, for use in case of emergencies. Most sets would have from 8-15 cars, and seating is either along the side of the cars, or removable (to allow more standing room!).
