-[ audiophonic overload ]- Sometimes I still consider it a little strange to think of music as a "hobby," but since so much of my money and time is spent on it, I thought it deserved recognition somewhere on this homepage. My taste is pretty eclectic, running the gamut from pop to break-beat electronica to hip-hop, but with the exceptions of metal, country (Shania Twain must DIE), ska (it just irks me, don't know why) and gangsta-rap (political statement or not, it's still crass and annoying). My long-time favorite has always been Madonna. She's an amazing woman, artist and performer, so I eat up anything she produces. Other artists you'll probably always find in my CD player are Seal, Gigas (check out their song "8 Devils of Kimon" at mp3.com, you won't be sorry), Michelle Branch, and Alanis Morissette. My year in Hong Kong broadened my interests in music as I was exposed and addicted to "Canto-Pop" artists like Aaron Kwok, Faye Wong, Andy Hui, and Nicholas Tse. Aside from Shania Twain, others on my top ten list of "Most Annoying Overplayed Untalented Skanks" include Mariah Carey (the slutty version that she is now) and Celine Dion (don't get me started on that "Titanic" thing). I despise each and every "boy band" in existence to date (this includes N'Stynk, negative 98 Degrees, and they-like-it-in-the-Backstreet Boys), along with former New Kids on the Block members who have decided to plague our world with their "comebacks." These days, I don't believe in buying music anymore. Record companies are greedy lil bastids, as shown by their assault on music sharing services such as Napster. Until they actually make CDs affordable (a cd "on sale" for $15 just doesn't cut it), especially since they're so ridiculously cheap to make in the first place, I'll consider buying more. So until they do, I'm just buying Madonna cds and singles. The rest of my music comes courtesy of WinMX and my very worshipable CABLE MODEM (it's so sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet)! Just remember that I was young and foolish once (as if I'm not now), so I can't be blamed for some of the bad buying decisions I've made ... -[ madonna ]- I love this woman. In my eyes, she can do no wrong ... with the exception of a few bad fashion choices (remember those cone braziers?). I've been a fan of hers since the days of Like A Prayer and I've followed her faithfully through all her myriad transformations and forays into new genres of music and styles of fashion. Say what you will about the woman, but no one can deny that she fought her way to the top despite all the odds stacked against her. She's both power and intelligence incarnate with incomparable talent and an eye for the avant garde that's made her a legend! Times change. And now she's the Jackson sibling basking in the spotlight, propelled into superstardom following smash hit after smash hit. I can't even count the number of number one hits this lady has had ... her touch is so golden it still amazes me! Favorite Songs That's the Way Love Goes, If, Miss You Much Favorite Videos If, Again -[ seal ]- If I could have the voice of one man on this planet, it'd have to be Seal's. His is an amazing one with raw emotional power and vocal grace. Each of his distinctive songs is entrancing, with layer upon layer of harmony blending into a beautiful whole ... I first became a fan of Seal's back in the late 1980s with his debut album Crazy. Interestingly enough, I remember watching Arsenio Hall when he had Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell as guests ... Lady M mentioned she was a fan of his, which of course piqued my curiosity! More than a decade later, I'm still avidly buying his albums ... Favorite Songs Future Love Paradise, Human Beings, Kiss From A Rose Favorite Videos Don't Cry, Crazy -[ victor calderone ]- One of my favorite DJs, Victor Calderone spins regularly at New York City's Roxy. He's done AMAZING work with Madonna, producing more remixes for her than any other DJ. And believe me when I say I listen to them repeatedly. Favorite Remixes Beautiful Stranger (Calderone Club Mix), Sky Fits Heaven (Calderone Future Mix) -[ faye wong ]- Faye Wong, best known in the United States for the song Eyes On Me on the Final Fantasy 8 soundtrack and for her role in the critically acclaimed film Chungking Express, is a lasting power in the Chinese pop music scene. Faye Wong, in Hong Kong pop tradition, has produced an almost countless number of full-length albums, at some points producing three in just one year! These days, however, the elusive media-shy pop queen, whose style of music is often compared to that of Bjork's, sustains herself with highly anticipated releases once a year or every other year. And in an industry that champions "here today, gone tomorrow" as its motto, Faye Wong's longevity and continued popularity is a testament to her genuine talent and lasting power. -[ aaron kwok ]- Hailed as one of the "Four Kings" of Hong Kong Canto-pop, Aaron Kwok has dazzled millions with a pretty face, charm, a ton of albums, and spectacular concerts. During my year in Hong Kong, he released two albums, the videos for which were played non-stop on TV and at Karaoke bars ... and that was fine with me! What distinguishes Aaron from his Canto-pop brethren is that his songs have energy and a pulse ... not an overdose of sappy love music (take note Jacky Cheung)! I can barely follow his lyrics sometimes (my Cantonese isn't that good), but hey, there are plenty of English songs that don't even make any sense and I CAN understand the language, heh. -[ sasha & digweed ]- Two of my favorite DJs, they're true pioneers of trance music. They're also GREAT remixes, the former of which has done several FANTASTIC mixes for Madonna. I don't dance or rave, but DAMN do I love the music ...
