Land and Sea

Eastern Newfoundland includes a variety of habitats: Lockston Path Park

Weather in Newfoundland can be variable, being affected by systems moving up the Atlantic and weather patterns moving east from the continent. Fog is common for much of the year in areas near the ocean.

In several places, whales can be seen from shore. There are also sea bird colonies along the rocky coast: some close to shore and some a short boat trip away. Here are some of the best places to see Atlantic puffins, the provincial bird. As in western Newfoundland, the moose, introduced here and thriving, can be a hazard on the roads.

Sedimentary rocks are more common in eastern Newfoundland than in the western part of the island.

Bonavista
The Bonvista Peninsula in northeastern Newfoundland is considered to be one place where John Cabot may have landed. The name may be derived from the Italian for "O, happy sight".

The capital city, St. John's, one of the oldest cities in Canada, and Cape Spear, the most easterly point of land in continental North America, are also found here.
