who says that Lawrence of Arabia is a bad film does not understand what makes
a movie great. I can understand someone not liking it, but completely missing
the beauty and grandness of it just shows that you do not know films as well as
you would like to think. David Lean made in addition to Lawrence an epic (long)
film known as Doctor Zhivago. This film was quite unenjoyable all in all in my
point of view, but I did at least grasp and admire the greatness of certain aspects.
Long does not equal good. Good equals good. Furthermore, what is with this about
The Fellowship of the Ring not having a decent ending? Do you not realize that
first of all, the books were written as ONE book and the publisher split them
up, and also that the films were made as one. The movie ends were the book ends,
just as it should. Nonetheless, I think the movie has a great ending. Why should
it have to end like The Godfather or Star Wars? Why not do something new and more
fitting to the film? Again, some people need to learn about film before trying
to logically complaining about them. I

THE STRUCTURE OF THE MOVIE JACOB'S LADDER The
most important way to begin understanding Jacob's Ladder ("in terms of what is
presented on the screen")is to remember that Jacob dies on the operating table
of a Vietnam camp. Jacob dies in Vietnam. That's the clincher! He is not a war
veteran like so many people seem to believe. And
if we accept this, then the rest of the movie is a dream...an hallucination...that
takes place while Jacob lies in coma on this operating table. The movie is Jacob's
state of mind in coma. This explains the phantasmic, sometimes illogical nature
of the movie: the ghoulish masks and the way Jacob skips from scenes with his
lover to scenes with his wife in an *almost* senseless montage of events. But,
the question is, why does Jacob have this dream...this hallucination...to begin
with?? Why doesn't he just die? At the end of the movie, even the doctors are
curious as to why Jacob held on to life so tenaciously. Well,
the reason Jacob hangs on, we soon discover, is that he is overwrought with guilt.
Jacob is a man trying to come to terms with his deamons, with the atrocious fact
that he killed so many of his own fellow soldiers in combat: soldiers who were
not the enemy. This dream or hallucination, then, is the way Jacob's brain...his
conscience...tries to logically make sense of the deaths he propogated. Jacob's
dream is his brain working frantically to redeem him of the crimes he has committed.
HOW could I have killed my own men?? He asks. Until Jacob can satisfactorily answer
this question for himself, he will never achieve peace: "The
only thing that burns in hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life:
your memories, your attachments. You burn them all away. They're not punishing
you...they're freeing your soul" Jacob's
mind, his conscience, finally answers his question for him. The motive for his
acts of violence and hate are a result of a drug that was administered to him
by the army. This drug is what provoked the violence and rage in Jacob that led
him to kill his men. But, the interesting thing about the movie is that because
it takes place in Jacob's dream his motive for having killed the other soldiers
becomes questionable. Is the drug story merely a fabrication of his imagination?
Is it the mind's way of healing itself...of fashioning logic out of chaos? Or,
did the drug really exist? Afterall, the army denies any use of such a drug. The
movie, therefore, doesn't take sides. It is left to the viewer to decide if the
drug really existed or not. In
my opinion, this movie is genius. Very

is my Top 10 list of OVERRATED films. I've seen these films on many "favorites"
and "greatest" lists and what's great about them is beyond my comprehension. 1)
Lawrence of Arabia - over 3 1/2 hours and you feel every second of it 2) The Graduate
- I even like Simon and Garfunkel and I ccan't stand how often they play "Sounds
of Silence" 3) The Grapes of Wrath - Oh gosh, somebody shoot me. Nothing entertaining
about this movie what-so-ever. 4) Close Encounters - Goes on too long and the
wait isn't worth the payoff. 5) Gladiator - I liked it better the first time I
saw it when it was called "The Ten Commandments". 6) Lord of the Rings - I know
it's a trilogy but for heaven's sake, have some kind of decent ending. Each movie
should be able to stand alone without the others (ie. Star Wars Trilogy, Godfather
Trilogy) 7) The Patriot - Too long and too predictable. You know it's a bad movie

Royal Tenenbaums - Was this movie supposed to be funny??? 9) Grosse Pointe Blank
- I just don't get the Pointe. 10) Fight Club - I'm not buyin' the ending. Sixth
Sense I buy totally, but this is nonsense and it ruined the movie for me. You

be over the worst; but his craving has just become more insidious. Evading a country
weekend planned by his brother Wick and girlfriend Helen, he begins a four-day

But this bout looks like being his last...one way or the other.

(AC 9/16/02) The
"bear scene" is a brief moment in The Shining when Wendy, beginning to see the
same "1920's Party" events that Jack's been seeing, is wandering through the halls
of the hotel. As she looks around a corner, she sees two shapes huddled over the
edge of a bed. As she looks, they are revealed to be two men, possibly engaged
in oral sex. One is wearing what looks to be a bear (1) costume. The scene is
taken directly from Stephen King's novel. In one of the novel's scenes set in
the 1920's party, Jack is dancing with a beautiful woman. He notices that at one
table, there is a young man behaving like a pet dog for the amusement of others,
including a tall, bald man. The bald man is Horace Derwent, a Howard Hughes-like
figure who poured millions into restoring the Overlook Hotel in the 1920's. (Jack
has learned this by reading a mysterious scrapbook earlier in the novel.) The
younger man has a romantic crush on the bisexual Derwent, and Derwent has said
that 'maybe', if the man dresses like a nice doggy, and acts like a nice doggy,
he 'may' be willing to sleep with him. Later on, in the novel, as Wendy is warily
navigating the corridors of the Overlook, she begins to see the visions of the
1920's party. And at one point, peering around a corner, she sees the two men
on a bed, one in a doggy costume. The two men are Derwent and his extremely dependent
lover. It's difficult to say why this second scene remains in the film; as it's
somewhat confounding without all of the set-up that King provides in his book.
Perhaps its jarring incongruity is reason enough for its inclusion, illustrating
as it does Wendy's extreme disorientation at that point in the film. Another explanation
is that the background on Derwent may have been scripted and filmed, (2) but excised
in the final cut.

I obliviously have no problems with despicable characters in films...but you know
as well as I do that the majority of the people watching these mafia characters
do in fact admire them. Let me be clear that I am not knocking the movies based
on this ( I and II are masterpieces), but simply fed up with the blind acceptance
