I was wondering if you could tell me something. at the very beginning of the movie, "Platoon," what is the song called as they were carrying the bodies? if you could tell me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Excellent movie and soundtrack. I believe I might be wrong, but I think the beginning of the film uses Barber's Adagio for Strings. (AC 3/27/03)

On 2/22/03 Patrick Metzger (pametzger@columbus.rr.com) submitted the following:

Dear Master Directors, Mr. Coppola and Mr. Tarantino specifically...WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING WITH YOUR TIME. ARE YOU GUYS PULLING A KUBRICK AND PUTTING OUT A FILM ONCE EVERY 8 YEARS OR WHAT??? I just don't get it. The best directors still inhabiting the planet are Scorcese (still doing semi-frequent good work), Speilberg (depending on your taste, still doing good work, Minority Report was very very good), Altman, Allen, Coppola (genius pissing away time and talent), and Tarentino (see Coppola). Please, come to your senses before it's too late.

There is no way you can call Tarantino a "master" director. This guy is a complete dip-shit....he has a movie coming out and that looks horrendous (Uma Thurman as a ninja). I do agree with you on Coppola however. (AC 3/27/03)

the movie lists arent bad, of course on a list of 100 there is going to be a few i disagree with but still i like the lists as a whole. the one question i have is this: where is/whats wrong with American History X? I would have it in my top 50 for sure, if not higher

Edward Norton gave an awesome performance in this movie, but for some reason the story didn't come together for me. (AC 3/27/03)

On 2/18/03 Stefanie (cheffychic@hotmail.com) submitted the following:

Great to see Amadeus on your list. An awesome movie that totally blew me away the first time I saw it. Same with Cat On a Hot Tin Roof (gotta love Paul Newman). You have some great movies on your list! Keep it up!

Thanks Stefanie...congrats on always being amongst the leaders on the triva page. (AC 3/27/03)

On 2/17/03 (n/a) submitted the following:

jabob's ladder, clockwork orange, the shining, dave, the royal tennebaums, liquid sky, clue, beatlejuice,

On 2/17/03 Ant (AntonyGordon16@hotmail.com) submitted the following:

I first saw Jacobs Ladder two days ago, i can honestly say i have never seens omething so impacting. Strangely enough, having scanned many various reviews of the film, not one seems to mention anything at all about the drug 'BZ' used by the U.S military upon the grunts, also how through the entire film that the flashbacks of NAM are actually the true reality of what's going on whilst his life in Brooklyn is actually just the intense 'trip' that the drug has spun him into.

Jacobs Ladder has generated more discussion on these pages than any other film. I don't believe it is an intense "trip", but more of how his mind is coming to terms with death and the chaos and fear that accompanies his last minutes alive. (AC 3/27/03)

"Lord of the Rings:The Two Towers" rules over all the usual CRAP that Hollywood has produced this year. "Chicago" and "Gangs of NY" and "Hours" are CRAP!!!!!!!!! LOTR is a masterpiece in a class by itself!!!!

Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece and was basically shunned at the major movie award shows. I do have to disagree with you on The Hours, which I thought was very good. (AC 3/27/03)

On 2/9/03 chris (no) submitted the following:

As good as the movie may be, the main reason christians fanatics, and even humble symphasizers (such as the helpless agnostic that i am) came out to protest the movie was because of the frustration with the common anti christian spirit in hollywood, and the heavy unfantastic fear of loosing what they are

Hollywood isnt anti-christian, they are in the business to create art and entertainment. That is it! (AC 3/26/03)

Hey Lori...thanks for the kind words. The process I used in creating my top 100 was mostly free association and the order in which I placed the movies was based on three criteria: the movie a)had the power to influence the way I view life, 2)was original, and 3)was entertaining. (AC 1/4/03)

Good quote Mojaveguy...here is another exchange:

Grampa: I ain't goin' to California. This is my country and I belong here. (He scoops up and clutches a handful of dirt) This is my dirt. It's no good, but it's mine, all mine.
Tom: Either we got to tie him up and throw him in the truck or somethin'. He can't stay here.
Pa: We can't tie him. Either we'll hurt him or he'll get so mad, he'll hurt hisself. Reckon we could get him drunk?

On 11/25/02 Brian (martinezba2000@yahoo) submitted the following:

Braveheart is ranked 98 in one list, and it is not even in the other. That is bullshit. It is easily in the top ten of any list. Futhermore, it is William Wallace narating in the end, and not Robert the Bruce. If you are going to quote an excellent movie, at least show some respect and do it accurately. Finally, if it was not for Scarface, there would no Carlito's Way. It is a great movie, but it is not better than its predecessor. You guys should really consider revising your list.

Brian...I've decided recently that Mel Gibson is a bafoon (Signs, We Were Soldiers, The Patriot, Conspiracy Theory...). Braveheart is a very good movie, but top hundred is really pushing it. Sean Penn's performance puts Carlito's Way ahead of Scarface in my opinion...I know many more people prefer Scarface. (AC 3/26/03)

You call Pulp Fiction over-rated, I call it genius. What I like best about Pulp Fiction and what is a major fault of many other movies is that in Pulp Fiction, not every word uttered by the characters is a freakin' plot point. The interplay between the characters and their dialogue are absolute genius and set this movie apart. Movies that use dialogue to only devulge plot points would be akin to Picasso drawing a picture using only straight lines. Pulp Fiction like Dr. Strangelove and some others is a film that gets BETTER with each viewing.

Respectfully disagree. (AC 3/26/03)

Do you know if there has ever been another version of "The Shining" or if there is another movie very similar to it? I recently watched the DVD and felt as though there were parts missing, like moving topiaries outside and other apparitions in the hotel. It is driving me nuts! Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Jacobs Ladder was supposedly about the effects of BZ gas, which was used in Vietnam.

I found the following on the subject (AC 12/6/02):

From gebirgjagr@aol.com (GebirgJagr)

BZ is a anticholinergic incapacitating agent that blocks the action of acetylcholine in the central nervous system. It disturbs higher integrative functions of memory, problem-solving, attention and comprehension; high doses produces toxic delirium which completely destroys the ability to perform any military task. Symptoms of BZ include dry, flushed skin, fast heartbeat, slowing of mental and physical activity, headaches, giddiness, disorientation, and hallucinations. BZ is found as a white powder at room temperature; decomposition occurs at 170 degrees C. Effects are transitory (hours to days) and have no known long term effects; lethality could only occur if the subject harmed himself under the influence of BZ. Training tapes of soldiers exposed to BZ showed them regressing to a juvenile state of behavior, unresponsive to commands, unable to carry out simple tasks or negotiate obstacles, complete lack of memory. After recovery, test subjects could not remember the experience and showed only disorientation due to inability to recollect the time they were exposed to BZ. The Army abandoned this as a potential weapon due to the difficulty of dispensing BZ in significant quantities to achieve agent effects. Also, planners were concerned that BZ poisoned soldiers would still be a danger since they would become unpredictable and ungoverned by rational thought. Conceivably, BZ poisoned soldiers could still "push the button" because it seemed like a pretty good joke at the time. Granted, nuclear release is a little more involved than just pushing a button, but you get the picture. The movie "Jacob's Ladder" was supposedly based on BZ experiments on unknowing soldiers, which caused them to go into a homicidal rage. In a word - bullshit. As stated above, BZ poisoning causes soldiers to regress and become apathethic, not killing machines.

Great site, keep up the good work. It sites like this that make the internet such a wonderful place to be at times. My favourite film of all time is probably Leon (but not for the violence). I don't understand all the hatred heaped on Gladiator, it was well made and a decent story, what more do you want. I'd love to see the armchair critics have a go at making a movie. Sorry there are no real "classics" but I only get to watch movies I have in my DVD collection. My top 10

1. Leon 2. Godfathers 3. The Green Mile 4. Star Wars 5. Saving Private Ryan (first half hour-jesus) 6. Pulp Fiction 7. Das Boot 8. Up In Smoke 9. Whats Eating Gilbert Grape 10. Gladiator (sorry)

also worth a mention

11. The Big Blue 12. Dawn Of The Dead 13. Braveheart 14. Clockwork Orange 15. Deliverance 16. Jurassic Park 17. Full Metal Jacket 18. Jason And The Argonauts 19. Long Good Friday 20. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Tons of movies I enjoy but wouldn't say they made a big impression like the above.

Hey...thanks for the kind words & support. You made some good calls here. I actually rented Dawn of the Dead last week and that was quite a trip. (AC 12/6/02)

Aaron, thanks for remembering 'Trading Places'! I still crack up at this movie every time I watch it. My favorite scene is when Billy Ray is in the jail cell trying to be Mr. Cool Guy to the other cell mates. 'It ain't cool bein' no jive turkey, so close to Thanksgiving.' I would have to add 'Coming to America', 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', 'The English Patient', and 'Raising Arizona'. Take care.
