10/29/03 schaden (n/a) submitted the following: geez,
fellas: what's gotten into your surly site users lately? if i were you, i suppose
i wouldn't sweat the seething hatred expressed by lugubrious and squalid, young,
white 20-somethings bent out of shape because you failed to list the godfather
in your no. 1 slot. golly,
is it folks like these ensuring that the censor-prone american film industry keeps
supplying us with a good supply of dreck (ie-movies for guys who like movies,
that is to say, chatty violent films with a "deep?" plot twist and a
killer shoot-em-up scene?) every friday night? i
don't want to sound too critical, but perhaps it's a sign of the times that these
folks promoting violent film (that's not to say their choices are badthe
godfather in fact is quite good (though i think the second one is better)) show
themselves to be feeble-minded reactionaries whose lives have plunged into meanness. i
mean, i don't like the taste of licorice, but that doesn't mean that those who
do are, well, let's see, how have they put it, retards who should, because you
have surveyed teenage girls for their opinions, (which is undoubtedly code for
"anti-war war movies") hang yourselves before you contaminate the rest
of the world with your bad taste. perhaps
these folks were drunk when visiting your site at 3 am? while that doesn't excuse
their, shall we call it, immature taste in fine film (ie"full metal
jacket" is a wonderful film, but cinema does not begin and end there), perhaps
it helps explain their meanness, which in the end should probably be forgiven.
i mean, writing drunk, anonymous emails at 3am, dividing the world into those
who think like them, and those who don't? that leads to nothing but maggots and
riots (ah, i dropped the reference, eh. okay, what movie?). anyway,
deep down inside all of usmen and women of all races and agesthere's
a guy who likes movies for guys who like movies, even me. bless
the hearts of the folks who refrain from using abuse to criticize the subjective
tastes of others, and who are, most assuredly, true lovers of the cinema and humanity.
that doesn't let you off the hook completely (iesome of you list movies
that pander to simple ideas, that's to say, i hope the only thing to turn, when
the butterfly appeared in patch adams, was stomachsbetter yet, we should
strike the film industry when they screen such monstrosities), but at least you
have an enthusiasm that prompts you to visit this site, which is to learn more
about film. anyway,
keep up the good work. shrug off the abuse. and keep watching those movies, good
and bad, you hear?

Aaron,I don't want to seem too very formal for the letter, which by the way
was to tell you how good your site is. I read today that I was about the 256 thousanth
person to visit the site. And with good reason. Also, you and your brother's top
100 lists are great. I noticed the both of you were very particular to the movie
"2001: A Space Odyssey", which I also loved. It is included in atleast
my top three favorites ever. The other two would be "Raging Bull" and
"Citizen Kane", and they would be followed by such films as "Schindler's
List", "Vertigo", "Dr. Strangelove", "Casablanca",
"Notorious", "Metropolis", and such others. But that's just
my opinion.

In my opinion, Kubrick is a genius. He is my 2nd favorite
director (Hitchcock 1st), seeing as he would have 5 films in my top 100, "2001",
"Dr. Strangelove", "A Clockwork Orange", "Lolita"
(unrecognized), and "Spartacus". I thought "Full Metal Jacket"
was over the top, as "A Clockwork Orange" was a bit, but just a bit.
And I still haven't seen "Paths of Glory". But anyway, I was wondering,
if you and your brother are partial to "2001", is Kubrick your favorite
director? I was just wandering, and if he isn't who is? Hope you get back in touch.
Thanks.

 James Gowen
 Reply:
Thank you very much James. I believe (and I'm sure Mark would agree..he has 2001
listed as his favorite movie), that 2001: A Space Odyssey is Kubricks best film
and one of the best of all-time. Kubrick is my favorite director. I know Mark
is huge fan of Kubrick as well (he may hold Ingmar Bergman in higher regard).

3/23/03 Adrian (adrian@leverseidge.freeserve.co.uk) submitted the following: Hi, I
visited your site to learn more about what others thought of "Jacob's Ladder"
(a featured “Top 100” film) and in particular to discover if anybody
else’s interpretation to the film’s storyline is similar to mine.
I have only come to find that my thoughts on the matter would seem rather unique.
Therefore, in addition to the current dialog you have published for the film,
I thought you may find some of my own thoughts a relatively plausible alternative
to what would seem to be the common reaction to the film's main message. I'm not
sure if you receive such feedback in addition to general site comments, but a
summary follows nonetheless. I'd be interested to here other's reactions. All
the dialogue I have read of the film imply that it is about Jacob's thoughts,
fears, and nightmares coloured by his unwillingness to let go of life whilst on
death's door in Vietnam. Jacob’s life, as we see it, is nothing more than
a figment of Jacob’s mind. I
think there are subtle clues in the film which suggest that this may not be accurate.
For instance, Jacob has it explained to him that a drug called 'The Ladder' (BZ)
was used on him and his battalion in Vietnam. How would he of known this at the
time of his death in Vietnam? I prefer to think that the aforementioned unnatural
drug, combined with Jacob’s unnatural death, results in an unplanned extension
to his life. This life has no grand design or fate. It meanders from one reality
to another, uncontrollably. The supernatural powers which we see (represented
by demons) are trying to pull back his life to the un-ended day at Vietnam, to
enforce order back into Jacob's blind wanderings. This is what the "setting
you free" speech refers to. The horrifically confused accidental life of
Jacob as we observe it is not a nightmare or any other figment of Jacob's mind,
but a sequence of realities which should not ofhappened, cannot be controlled,
and have spiralled into !
chaos.
 Cheers
for reading this far, Adrian
 Excellent
contribution and theory Adrian. In my opinion, the explanation is self generated
as a way to die knowing why. (MC 3/23/03)
