You guys have a Best Director Poll on your site, but no where does it state who YOU feel is the best American/English director of all-time. How about it guys, who's your fave?

Hey Timmy...as far as American/English directors are concerned, we both agree that Stanley Kubrick is our favorite. Other favorites of mine include Scorsese, Stone, and Lynch. Marks favorite director of all-time is Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. (AC 7/13/01)

On July 2, 2001 Kip Wade (pethly@hotmail.com) submitted the following:

I noticed many great films missing from your lists. Where is The Adventures of Robin Hood? Where is Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets? One of you included The Birth of a Nation, but why include D.W. Griffith's rascist and overlong film when you could have Intolerance, Broken Blossoms, or Way Down East, which are much superior films of his? Where is Blade Runner? Where is Midnight Cowboy, another brilliant film? Or The Night of the Hunter? You also need to put Jacques Tourneur's film noir Out of the Past and George Cuckor's A Star is Born. There are a number of other movies I would recommend you put on the list, but, of course, you don't need to. I'm figuring you haven't seen any of these films, I'm basically just recommending them. I have to applaud you on many of your choices, where are much better than many other top 100 lists, although I could tell you didn't understand some of the films you put on your list, such as A Clockwork Orange, which Kubrick never really intended to be disturbing. By the way, I put my own top 100 list on here, be sure to look at it and e-mail me with your thoughts. Great web site

Hey Kip...thanks for the compliments and suggestions. I have seen most of the films you suggested here, but they simply didn't make my list (the directors cut of Blade Runner is amazing). I have to agree with my brother that regardless of what Kubrick intended, A Clockwork Orange is a very disturbing film. Sure it is satirical social commentary, but you have to admit the gang rapes were pretty damn unsettling. Excellent list by the way (click here), I'll e-mail you soon with more input. (AC 7/13/01)

Your "The Shining" site is very interesting. One problem: the Midnight audio file does not play. The AOL media player window does not display 'connecting' and / or 'playing'. All other audio files play properly.

Thanks for pointing out the error Jim. I am trying to locate that file, and will post it, if and when I find it. (AC 7/7/01)

On June 27, 2001 Donny Wallace (donnywallace@hotmail.com) submitted the following:

In no order and without dates- I only included 50 because I haven't seen a lot of films yet including the Wild Bunch. I am starting to seriously watch films amd collect information on them. But I am only going to watch 3 a month and maybe one repeat so I can remember them. So it would take about 5-10 years for this list to be closer to accurate. Even though I think some of these films have flaws, all of them pass the main test: I could watch them over and over.

Yes do you know where I may still get posters of X Donald Sutherlands character and Kevin Costners character Jim Garrisons let me know waht sizes and prices maybe avaible. Thanks. Incidentalliy I understand the real Jim Garrison was in taht fim as well let me know any thing about him-and what he did think of his time in it as he is now gone like so many others who knew what the case was all about I was involed in it quite a bit when the film frist came out again but very sadly not information has been fourth coming about any more about any thing more about it since back in 1991 some of us are still trying to find out who killed Kennedy indeed many of us stil care very much he was our president and will always be so we have a right too know at last who did it and why indeed lets finally find out.

The real New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison makes a very interesting cameo in J.F.K., as the late Chief Justice Earl Warren. It is ironic that Oliver Stone would have him play the part of Warren, because Garrison spent most of his adult life attempting to discredit him. As far as the posters are concerned, perhaps the following sites may help: http://www.clubi.ie/cinemania/, http://us.imdb.com/, http://s1.amazon.com (AC 7/5/01)

I do not see how anybody cannot put the movie Seven as one of the best films ever. It is not your typical chase after the criminal and finally catch him. Its very intelligent and weel done with some great actors too.

I agree Adam...Seven is different and clever and one of the greatest suspense/thrillers ever made. I suppose with time it will gain more respect. (AC 7/5/01)

Actually it's more like a question. We were debating the end of "Seven" and wondering, (even though it's quite qrotesque) is it the baby or Brad Pitt's wife's head in the box? What do you think?

Hey Karin...I'm pretty sure that it is his wife's head. (AC 7/5/01

I have tried movie trivia sites, chat rooms, etc. and still do not have the correct answer to this question: What is the name, registry, homeport, and history of the SHIP pictured on the tin box unearthed by Red in the Buxton hayfield? It is NOT the R. M. S. Titanic! But, what ship is it? If you don't know, it's OKAY! But, then, could you please direct me to the props people for this film. They would know this information, for sure! Thanx.

Love the last name Craig (same as mine), but unfortunatly I couldn't find any information for you...good luck. (AC 7/5/01)

Movies are can be very powerful things and I am obsessed with them. I am amazed that a director can come up with the ingredients for a great movie. Here is a list of movies that in my opinion are some the greatest ever made. I know I will forget a lot. These are in no particular order :

  • American Beauty
  • Sling Blade
  • Requiem for a dream
  • The apostle
  • Fargo
  • Of mice and men
  • Braveheart
  • traffic
  • Left Luggage
  • Grosse Point Blank
  • High Fidelity
  • Godfather 1
  • Schindeler's List
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Shawshank redemption
  • Dead Poet's Society
  • Shadowlands
  • Silence of the Lambs
  • Magnolia
  • Bridge over the river kwai
  • L.A confidential
  • Dances with wolves
  • Any independent film (which are usually better than most american main stream movies)

Great choices Jon... one film I was not familiar with is Left Luggage. For those interested as well the plot summary I found on the internet site IMDB reads as follows: Chaja is a philosophy student in Antwerp, 1972. She takes a job as a nanny with the Kalman family. Although she first wants to quit because she doesn't like their strict-Jewish (Chassidic) rules, she decides against it because she starts to like the 4 year old boy of the family (later she will even admit to have fallen in love with him). In the meantime her father is looking for the place where he buried two suitcases when he was a refugee during the war. (AC 6/29/01)

Dude, how did Fisher King top Lawrence of Arabia or Seven Samurai? What is up with your shit?

Terry Gilliam is a genius who also had the balls to try something different. I expect most people to question the high placement of Fisher King on my list, but for me, it just had a bigger impact then the very good films you mentioned. (AC 6/29/01)

  • 3. J.F.K.(Although it is not "the truth" like Stone and Garrison say)
  • 4. Malcolm X
  • 5. GoodFellas
  • 6. L.A. Confidential
  • 7. Ed Wood
  • 8. Rushmore
  • 9. Schindler's List
  • 10. The Silence of the Lambs

in approximately that order.

I also wish to state that Traffic was by far the best film of 2000, and I must agree with my friend Michael Ellis that Gladiator was one of the worst, most boring wastes of film ever created. Death to Russell Crowe! (Even though he was in L.A. Confidential)

Very good list Rollo...I have to point out (because I am a big fan of JFK and Stone as well) that Stone never declared JFK to be the "truth". He has been quite adamant in the fact that this film merely presents an alternate "theory" to the Warren Commission report. (AC 6/29/01)

I can think of hell of alot worse movies than Gladiator and Forrest Gump. I do agree that Star Wars: Episode 1: Phantom Menace was absolutely atrocious. (AC 6/29/01)
