Memorable
quotes:
Larry:
Oh come on Alan, you don't want to quit me, I'm your dream client. I'm rich, I'm
the most fun and I'm always in trouble.
Larry
Flynt: 25 years. All I'm guilty of is bad taste.
saacman:
Larry, thousands of people petition the Supreme Court, OK? Thousands.
Larry
Flynt: Yeah, and our case is as good as any.
Isaacman:
Our case is better than most, you're missing my point, and that is they will never
pick you. Because you're a nightmare. They're afraid if they let you in there,
you're gonna wear a diaper, or throw oranges at the justices, and they should
be, Larry, because in all the times you've gone to the court asking for help,
you've never once demonstrated any respect for its institutions and procedures.
Larry Flynt: What is more obscene: Sex or
war?
Mantke
Clerk: Do you
swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help yo
God?
Larry Flynt: No.
Judge
Thomas Alva Mantke: No?
Larry Flynt:
Your honor, I'm an atheist. I can't very well, uh, swear to a God I don't believe
exists.
Judge Thomas Alva Mantke: Mr. Flynt, you are a handful.
Larry
Flynt: I know, your honor.
Review:
Milos Forman's
(One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest,
Amadeus) latest film, The People vs. Larry Flynt, is an intelligent
story that keeps us interested and involved. It doesn't appear as if it's Forman's
intent to turn Flynt into a hero. What Forman does succeed in doing is capturing
the fascinating life of a hillbilly eccentric who happens to fall into a major
Supreme Court case. The film also acts as an offbeat love story. Harrelson (Natural
Born Killers) is fine in the early scenes, but he really emerges in that
wheelchair (I believe his best performance to date). Surprisingly, Courtney Love
delivers an astonishing performance as Anthea, the drug addicted and former stripper
wife of Flynt. As she dissolves in a losing battle with AIDS, she appears to not
at all be concerned over whether or not the audience likes her. Lets face it,
few actors today have that kind of fearlessness. Norton, who made an impressive
debut in Primal Fear, does another exceptional job here. You don't have
to like Flynt to support his struggles and enjoy this depiction of them. -Review
