This page uses two different spelling systems, first one which uses vowels like in American English words. Then in parentheses (....) are spellings which correspond more closely to the Russian alphabet spelling of the Russian words. The pronunciation of the words using the different spellings is the same.
Kahleenah (kalína), Highbush cranberry used
for jelly. Lots of natural pectin. Acrid smell until cooked but makes a
delightful jelly. It is a 'prototypical' Russian berry. This berry is featured in one of the best known Russian folk songs, "Kalina", the music for which should be playing in the background as you view this page.
Buruznik (buruzníka), Lowbush cranberries.
Marahshki (maráshki), Cloudberries..pronounced
like Muhroshki. The berry looks similar to a raspberry but is a brilliant
orange in color. Extremely high in vitamin C and high in pectin. Grows
in the flats. Used to be plentiful at Deep Creek Flat, Krasnay Mees and
other places. It is scarce now. Delicious on Sourdough pancakes. Grows
low to the ground.
Gauleebluekuh (gulablyíka), Blueberry.
Keekaushla (kikáshlya ), Small bog blueberry.
Cheekshah (chíksha), Crowberry, a small blackberry used for
jam and pie. Looks like a black blueberry but the flesh is firm.
Sheeshka (shíshka), Crowberries. We are not yet sure
if this is a Russian or Indian word.
Sheekshuk (shíkshuk), Blackberry. Probably an Indian word.
Smahryodyeenah (smaryódyina), Currants
