Leonard Betts
This X-File concerns a man, Leonard Betts, who seems
impervious to injury or death; capable of regenerating
himself. Near the end of the episode we see him approach a
man who appears to be a heavy smoker. Before he kills him
Betts says, "I'm sorry. But you've got something I need." We
learn that he is only killing people with cancer, something
he has an exceptional ability to diagnose. He seems capable
of sensing cancer within a person without an examination.
Leonard requires the cancerous cells to live and to
regenerate.
When the partners finally track down Betts, he's been at
his mother's house and removed some cancerous tissue from
her at her request to strengthen himself. She's still alive
and Scully goes in the ambulance with her while Mulder stays
at the house to continue the search for Betts. What they
don't know is that Betts is hiding on top of the ambulance.
Scully is on her cell phone to Mulder as Betts' mother is
taken from the ambulance into the hospital. As Scully steps
out, something drips from the roof of the ambulance onto her
head. Realizing that Betts has been on the roof, she tells
Mulder to get over to the hospital immediately. She draws
her gun and begins to climb onto the roof of the ambulance
when Betts grabs her from behind and tosses her into the
ambulance, shutting the doors behind them. As he advances,
scalpel drawn, he says, "I'm sorry. But you've got something
I need." Scully's surprise and fear is replaced by shock and
recognition. His words can mean only one thing. She has
cancer.
After a fight in the ambulance where Scully prevails,
Betts lies dying. Later, Mulder finds Scully sitting
silently and forlorn in the car and brings her the news that
Betts has been pronounced dead. He tells her the mother will
recover and Scully inquires whether she had cancer. The
confirmation of this causes Scully to turn away and Mulder,
trying to be supportive says, "You did a good job, Scully.
You should be proud." Scully's only reply is, "I want to go
home." Mulder has no way of knowing yet what she herself has
ascertained.
The episode ends with Scully waking in bed in the early
hours of the morning. She has a persistent cough and there
is blood on her pillow from a bloody nose. She touches the
spot of blood then her nose as the reality of her situation
sets in. The clock on her bedside table reads 2:08. Possibly
a reference to the eighth episode of season two, "One
Breath". This was when Scully was returned in a near death
state following her abduction and the experiments that are
most certainly the cause of her current condition.
