Mythology

Mercury was the Roman counterpart to the Greek god Hermes, the messenger of the gods. Hermes is often depicted wearing winged sandals, which allowed him to move with amazing speed through the skies towards whatever destination he had chosen. He was the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, and he was also the greatest mischief-maker among the gods. Much like the god after it was named, the planet Mercury speeds around the sun once every 88 days. Mercury is also the name of an element used to measure heat, and the element's properties have earned it the nickname "quicksilver". Thus, the name Mercury is synonymous with speed.
