Mythology

In Roman mythology, Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty (the planet Venus was so-named because it was one of the most beautiful sights in the evening skies). Her Greek counterpart was the goddess Aphrodite, who was said to have been born as a result of the castrated genitals of Uranus coming in contact with the sea, from which she emerged, fully-grown, as the most beautiful of the Greek goddesses. Not coincidentally, Aphrodite was the patron of young lovers and married couples in Greek mythology, but she herself was anything but monogamous. It was said that she had affairs with many gods and mortals, but she also had the gift of being able to bathe in the ocean and have her virginity restored to her. Not exactly fair, but then the gods were notorious for exploiting their divine privileges.
