Mythology

The Roman Saturn corresponds to the Greek Cronus, who was the father of Zeus and numerous other Gods. Cronus was the King of the Titans, the race of Gods that lived before Zeus's time. Cronus learned through a prophecy that he would someday be overthrown by one of his children, so it became his habit to devour his children as soon as they were born (no one ever said he was much of a family man). However, when Zeus was born, his wife Rhea (Roman name: Ops) presented with a stone to swallow in the child's place (no one ever said Cronus was bright, either). Zeus grew to manhood, forced Cronus to regurgitate his brothers and sisters (which, naturally, came out fully grown and undigested), and then proceeded to battle him, finally succeeding in overthrowing Cronus several years later when he killed him with a lightning bolt (in keeping with the dysfunctional family theme).
