These are the events leading up to Wildcore from the pages of Backlash. Note: this synopsis is taken from the letters page in Wildcore #3.
Eons ago, the Kherubim and the D'rahn were allied against a common enemy, the Daemonites. As tides of battle turned and the Daemonite threat began to lessen, the Kherubim realized that the ruthless D'rahn themselves would pose an even greater threat. Using technology gained during the alliance, the Kherubim destroyed the D'rahn home world.
On earth, the Kherubim Lord S'ylton, leader of the colony of Atlantis, gave his life to imprison the reamining D'rahn. Along with the soul-weaver Tapestry and the wizard Azrum he trapped the D'rahn in a tomb beneath his throne room. Azrum wrote the spell used to trap the D'rahn on a parchment in case they ever broke free.
In the present, the scroll was exhibited at a New York museum, with Azrum in attendance. The evil wizard Haroth stole the scroll, in the process endangering Jodi, Backlash's daughter who possessed a ring passed down to her from Lord S'ylton. Recognizing the ring, Azrum apprised Jodi and Backlash of their heritage, and enlisted the help of Department PSI in stopping Haroth before he could release the D'rahn.

They failed, the D'rahn were released, the spell scroll is destroyed, and Backlash sought help from WildC.A.T.s in fighting the D'rahn. Zealot agreed to accompany Backlash and Azrum to seek out Ferrian, a Kherubim and the only individual to defeat a D'rahn in single combat. With his assistant Vigor, Ferrian agreed to join Backlash in his battle and sent Azrum to find Tapestry and beg her aid in finding a spell to help defeat the D'rahn.
Backlash, Ferrian and Zealot return to Department PSI, where they join Taboo and Styrian to form a new Task force called Wildcore, to find a way to defeat the D'rahn and save the world.
