Part 3 – Book Guide

Need books about The X-Files? No problemo!

Book of the Unexplained – Jane Goldman A brilliant book exploring the facts behind the fiction of The X-Files. Good to have if you’re one of those people who like the ‘Behind the Scenes’ bits of films. Also available: Book of the Unexplained Part 2. Comes in a very cool silver sleeve. (There is supposed to be a third part available but none of the bookstores I’ve visited have heard of it. Congrats if you find it!)

Official Guide to The X-Files – Brian Lowry This contains episode summaries for seasons 1 and 2, and the first three episodes of season 3. Also has a nice introductory passage, character dossiers at the back, and facts inserted into the margins throughout the whole thing. Also available: Guide 2; and Guides 3-5 by Andy Meisler. The latter are almost in script form. Very useful when it comes to Scully’s long and complicated scientific analyses.

The Unofficial Guide to The X-Files – N E Genge Not as great as the Official Guides but cool nonetheless. It gives a little more info on the facts behind the episodes and has quizzes at the end of each episode. At the end, your score determines where you are on the ladder within the FBI. I never quite reach CSM level – that’s for pure through-and-through professionals only! Also available: Parts 2, 3 & 4.

Postcard Books Lots of v. cool pictures and you can send them to friends, stick ‘em on your wall, or just keep them in the book for safe keeping. They aren’t useful in a word, but they contain good screen captures from the episodes and are dinky sized so they can fit anywhere.

Dreamwatch, The X-Files Magazine, X-Posé, Cult Times and Starburst All great magazines to buy although most of them favour Buffy and Babylon 5. I like Buffy. I don’t like Babylon 5. Best stick to the official mag. if you’re a little strapped for cash and prefer to spend it on Elle, Vogue and Glamour... I get fed up with magazines pretty quickly so I’ve made some respectable looking scrapbooks out of the covers and the interviews and pictures inside. They’re fun, easy to do and you can customise to your heart’s content. And the best thing about them – people don’t know they’re there unless you tell them. It’s the best way of being a mega-enthusiastic fan without anyone even twigging. Cool, huh?
