Angel: Blind Date

Angel is alerted to the presence of a demonic sightless killer by Lindsey from Wolfram & Hart, who wishes to escape the firm.

Apart from a couple of odd moments, this is an interesting look at Wolfram & Hart from the inside, and at how much humans are motivated by their desires. Throughout, you have no idea just when Lindsey is going to switch sides, and the fact that he doesn’t leads to a neat ending where he finally gives in to the power he wants.

There’s an element of chess-playing to this episode as events are set in motion that are clearly going to become important in the season finale, but that doesn’t detract from this episode. There’s certainly plenty going on to keep you occupied, with Angel and Lindsey’s infiltration of Wolfram & Hart superbly executed, not to mention wonderfully played by David Boreanaz, who does the vampiric superspy routine with ease.

At last we get to see the full extent of Wolfram & Hart, and although certain aspects seem at odds with the more human face we’ve seen to date (mind readers, demon guards), their array of defences is pretty impressive. The execution of one of the staff makes a neat point, showing how far the company are willing to go, but the return of Gunn from Warzone in the break-in sequence seems rather a waste of the character.

If there’s any problem with the story, it’s that the main storyline the title refers to is a small part of the episode, which seems unfair. On the other hand, human drama is always more interesting than a simple fight sequence, even if this fight is fascinating to watch, when Angel realizes that simply attacking won’t help him. It’s unusual and welcome to see him use some of his vampiric abilities here and it’s also good to see that Lindsey does at least have some principles.

Plenty to use here to further the storyline.
