Earth: Final Conflict: The Once and Future World

An artefact is unearthed that Zo'or wants desperately to advance his plan for humanity. As Sandoval and Liam both try to get to it first, Renee seems to have an agenda of her own.

You can't trust anyone these days. The only people who seem to be dealing honestly anymore are Liam and Augur, and even the latter is in it for the money. Now, I've never been particularly interested in the whole Ma'el storyline that began with The Secret of Strandhill, mainly because it has so far added nothing to the ongoing arc at all, except that Taelons were here 2000 years ago. Well, good for them.

However, things start to become slightly clearer in this story, which focuses on a search for something very few people on Earth know about. There are surprise revelations, and most importantly, plenty of behind-the-scenes backstabbing. Does Da'an want the artefact for his own ends or to help Zo'or? His motivations are becoming increasingly unclear. What is Renee's allegiance? What is Doors' plan with his new Taelon alliance? The last two are partly explained by the end of the story, but there are clearly more secrets out there. Where last season focused on Liam, Augur and Zo'or to almost the exclusion of everyone else, this episode further consolidates season three's success in using each person in a story. Sandoval is acting more like an FBI agent, a facet mainly ignored up to now, Liam is thinking rather than just acting and Da'an and Zo'or seem closer than they were. Speaking of Liam, his theft of the Taelon artefact is extremely cool, using portal technology and perfect timing to get in and get out. Inspired.

The other aspects worth noting are those that convince the viewer he or she's in South America. Clever location work and vehicle use work well, but that often-overlooked aspect of the series, the music, is particularly striking. Despite a slow start, this episode builds into something that leaves plenty of interesting things to follow up further down the line.
