Betsy Braddock is the twin sister of Brian Braddock, also
known as Captain Britain. Her power however, was telepathy, and a far cry
from her brothers strength. Betsy spent the early days of her career at home
in Braddock Mansion while her brother fought for the country. Her
brother retired for a time though, and Betsy took up the suit and
mantle of Captain Britain. The suit modified her abilities, making
her stronger and and tougher, but this was no replacement for battle
skill, as she discovered when she went up against the villain Slaymaster.
The villain took her eyes, blinding her. Captain Britain resumed his role
as defender of the country, and Betsy adjusted to her new state,
deciding to have a domestic life rather than a super-hero's.
Circumstances eventually landed her with New Mutants and after a trip through
Mojo World, she returned to earth with new bionic eyes. Unfortuantely,
and unbeknownst to her, Mojo used these eyes to spy on the X-Men.
She stayed with the New Mutants for a time, becoming rather involved with
Doug Ramsey (Cypher). While staying with them in the X-Mansion, she
more than proved her mettle by battling Sabretooth, and was accepted
to the X-Men.
Her early days with the X-Men were a struggle. Though she was a telepath
of formidable talent,
Betsy had always longed to be the warrior and
loathed the fact that she had to stay in the background constantly.
Wolverine helped her come to the forefront a bit more by supplying
her with a flexible suit of armor which protected her from physical
harm to a greater degree. Still, this was not enough for her.
Upon returning to the X-Men's Australian complex at one point, Betsy
was greeted by a vision of the X-Men's deaths should they remain there.
When trying to convince the other team members to leave failed, she
used her psi-powers to trick them into the Siege Perilous, hoping it
would bring them better fates. She followed last and closed the portal
behind her. The Siege dropped her on the shores of Japan, broken and her
mind shattered. Found by the villain Mandarin's people, he and Shinobi
thought to subvert her to their cause while in her weakened state.
They put her through a process involving magic and science, changing her completely
in body and mind. Psylocke emerged from the process no longer the soft Britain
lady, now transformed into a deadly asian ninja. Mandarin thought
his transformation complete, having bent the telepath to his will and had
plans to make her his number one assassin. His plans backfired, however
when Wolverine showed up and snapped Betsy from her trance. Changed,
but still an X-Man, Betsy returned with Wolverine to the team.
Much more powerful now, her very body a weapon, Psylocke finally
had what she had always desired. Her psi-powers had augmented also, and
could now be focused into a psi-knife, a blade of psionic power which can incapacitate
almost anyone without harm by scrambling their synapses.
The X-Men had a bit of a hard time accepting the new Betsy, but time
cures all, and eventually all was well. Months afterward, things became
very confused when a new hero named Revanche showed up wearing the
British Betsy's face and body. Her powers were all the same as Psylocke's,
the ninja and psi-abilities, but she claimed that Psylocke was the imposter.
In order to solve the mystery, the X-Men traveled to Japan. What they
found was that both of the ladies were correct. It seemed that when
Betsy Braddock washed up on the shores of Japan, an assassin named
Kwannon had come to her rescue. Touching Betsy in her shattered state of mind
caused a transference of minds, fusing the two minds as one in each body.
The British Betsy was found by a villain named Nyorin and it was he who helped
put together her shattered mind. Kwannon was the one who underwent the
process of Mandarins schemes. Now understanding how their fates were
intertwined, the two accepted on another on a wary basis. Unfortunately,
it was soon revealed that Revanche, the original Betsy Braddock, was dying
of the Legacy Virus. When she finally passed from the world, she offered
the memories that had been divided between them back to Psylocke,
who received them at the moment of her death, making her whole again.
Her identity resolved, Psylocke turned to other things in her life,
namely love. She and Archangel were becoming quite close when Betsy
was once again forced to confront Sabretooth in battle once again. She saved Boom-Boom's life,
but nearly at the cost of her own. She was dying when the X-Men found her.
In order to save her life, Wolverine and Archangel traveled back to
Japan, seeking the Crimson Dawn elixir.
The elixir saved her, but not without changing Betsy once again.
Now bearing the red mark of the Crimson Dawn over her right eye,
Betsy has discovered new powers she did not possess before, the
extent of which has yet to be discovered. While trying to explore and become comfortable with her new powers, she was subverted and almost possessed by the creator of the Crimson Dawn elixir. Only with the help and love of Archangel, now Angel again, was she able to revert to her true self and escape. While she now knows more of her powers and their origin, it seems that this is only the tip of the iceberg as she continues to explore the darker side of herself. Most recently she has been tricked by the Shadow King into releasing him from the astral plane, taking severe physical and psionic damage from the release and resulting in the loss of all her telepathic power. Psylocke has resigned from the X-Men, at least for now, while she tries to recover from her injuries, and seems to have retired to her homeland of England with Angel.
Other distinguishing features: Red tattoo over her
left eye.
Strength level: Psylocke possesses the normal human
strength of a woman of her age, height, and build who
engages in intensive regular exercise.
Known superhuman powers: Psylocke possesses
many telepathic abilities, enabling her to read minds,
communicate mentally with others over long distances,
stun the minds of others with "mental bolts," control the
minds of others, and create illusions in the minds of
others. Psylocke can intensely focus her psionic powers
into her "psychic knife," with which she can stun or kill
an adversary.
Other abilities: Psylocke is highly skilled in Far Eastern
martial arts.
