Routine Discussions

Way back in the old office Arus Pelangi started to routinely hold discussions on LGBT topics; first with the lesbian communities. They were initially successful but after a while the attendance rate started to drop. The main reason was that discussions alone were less attractive for the majority of the lesbians. Besides, lesbians generally tend to look for a safe space to get together in an informal way rather than formal discussion. That is why the discussions were temporarily halted. In the meantime Arus Pelangi looked for other ways to revive the routine discussion sessions because it is considered an important part of the education program of Arus Pelangi.

In 2007 Arus Pelangi got a bigger office space and additional equipment, like projectors, so it could revive the routine discussion rounds by combining them with film showing. Since more and more LGBT films are becoming available, they serve to kickstart a discussion on various topics related to the situation and lifestyles of LGBT in Indonesia.

Once in a while Arus Pelangi would invite a resource person to give a lecture on a topic requested by the participants themselves. The topics often are related to the interpretation of religious teachings since the majority of Indonesians are still strong believers. To provide religious interpretations that do respect LGBT people is important in the fight against homophobia.
