Training on Organization Building in Purwokerto

Education forms an important part of the process of strengthening local LGBT communities. Roughly speaking, there are trainings aimed at strengthening organizations and other at individuals. An example of the first was training on Organization Building held in Purwokerto. It is meant to understand how an organization works and how to build it. Topics like trust building, communication and procedures are discussed as well.

All LGBT communities that want to build a local organization will get such a training.

The proud first batch. Another type of training is focused on the individual level: counseling since so many LGBT people are still struggling to accept their sexual preference and identity. And there is so little help available to them.
With the first training of trainers on counseling Arus Pelangi aimed at having enough people trained in order to open a hotline in Jakarta. This was held in December 2006 and facilitated by ICMC.
After that, Arus Pelangi launched its own counseling training; first in Jakarta. Unfortunately only a few were able to attend it due to the floods that ravaged through Jakarta in January 2007.

After Jakarta Arus Pelangi went to conduct trainings in several places, among others in Purwokerto, Surabaya and Palembang. It is interesting to note that there are quite some differences in the level of self-identification among the participants.

A common problem for those who have attended the training and want to be a counselor is the lack of space that is conducive for counseling sessions; most LGBT communities in the provinces either gather in public spaces or in private houses.
