The National Commission on Human Rights [KomnasHAM] will elect a new batch of commissioners in 2007. Though Komnas HAM has not that much power to guarantee that the government respects human rights as it should, it is still regarded as the best vehicle to promote a better policy and implementation on human rights from the government. Representatives from all segments of the society are allowed to apply for candidacy. Since there have been so far no representatives from LGBT, Arus Pelangi convinced two outspoken transgender leaders to file their candidacy. They are Nancy Iskandar from 'Srikandi Sejati Foundation' and Yuli Rettoblaut from 'Forum Komunikasi Waria'. |

Accompanied by a dozen transgenders they submitted their application at the KomnasHAM on January 22. If elected they promised to work for the rights of sexual minorities, especially the transgender communities. Mamie Yuli said: "whether you like it or not, we [transgender people] are here, and we are not going away". In the long process of selection she had continuously to explain her reasons and her capacity to fight for minority rights, especially for the transgender communities. Indeed, after so many rounds nobody can ignore the LGBT issue anymore. |

After a long process the selection commission chose 43 candidates and Mamie Yuli was one of them. This was already a victory, albeit a relatively easy one since the selection commission was composed of NGO people. The list of 43 candidates was then submitted to the parliamentary commission; they had the final say. On June 20 the big day - The Fit & Propoer Test - came and Mamie Yuli was summoned by the parliamentary commission. It was a hard test because at the end the commission chose only 11 candidates to become the new Human Rights Commissioners. It was a clear disappointment for us. But not all is lost; the new commissioners still have the freedom to choose more commissioners to ease the workload. We have to wait and see. |
