Networking

There are already many programs focusing on the rise of these Syariah-based laws, focusing on various aspects from legal aid to discussions on Women's Rights. What has become very clear, however, is that these individual programs make only a small dent in the system, and have thus far been ineffective in redirecting policy to uphold the rights of all Indonesian citizens. That is how this project came to being; by capitalizing on the strengths of all the individual organizations working on the Perdas, and bringing them together in one coalition, all of the energy that is otherwise lost will be channeled into a specific, coordinated program through which the strategies of individual organizations can be carried out in a wider scope, to a larger public, and with more tangible results.

Furthermore, this coalition will be enabling local organizations to carry on this program in the districts directly affected by the Perdas, thereby strengthening both the overall abilities of local NGOs outside of Jakarta, and the national campaign to uphold the Human Rights, most specifically those of women and ethnic and religious minorities, violated in these Perda by activating both the local and national levels behind this unified cause.

Networking with other human rights groups, womyn's and minority organizations, to stage mass actions against the impeding adoption of a highly controversial Bill against Pornography and Indecent Behaviour. This bill would have effectively imposed Islamic norms of decency and morality upon all citizens, regardless their background and identity. Fortunately, enough strength was gathered by civil society groups and organizations to force the legislature to revise the draft; the debate has, at the moment, been indefinitely postponed.

Another form of networking is to hold joint press conferences on a common issue. the latest of such issue was the Day of Rememberance for Transgender People, November 20, 2006. On that day Arus Pelangi, KontraS and Yayasan Srikandi Sejati jointly held a press conference exhorting the end of violence against transgender people and to the government to prosecute the perpetrators of such crimes. Special mention was given to the killing of a young transvestite in Purwokerto in November 2005.
