Wulfwyn of Dean

Wulfwyn of Dean, 897AD
(aka Sue Peacock)

Meet the Lady Wulfwyn of Dean. She is married to Eirik of Borgund, a man of Norse (Viking) origin, and the couple are now settled in the Forests that form the border between Wessex and Mercia.

Wulfwyn was born of noble parents, her father being Thegn in the South East of the Shire of Kent. She was their only surviving child and as such inherited her parents' lands. She married Godwin, an Eolderman of Hrofcaester, but this was not a successful union and was eventually brought before the courts and they were granted a divorce.

At about the time of this happening a young nobleman, Leofric, who had been fostered by Godwin was ready to return to his father's hall in that part of the Kingdom of Hwicce known as Great Dean. She decided that it would be beneficial for all if she accompanied him paying a visit to the Hall where she met Eirik.

Eirik was of Norse blood and had indeed been in the employ of the Danish Jarls who had fought the men of Gloucester in 877. Leofric's father, Leofwin, noticed Eirik's bravery and fighting skills and when the Viking companions left Eirik for dead in his tent Leofwin sent his physician to aid him.

He had stayed with Leofwin and had trained many of the Eorldman's hearth troops. Eirik and Wulfwyn found happiness in each other's company and so it was that she stayed at his side in the kingdom of Hwicce.
