Samis in
Norway
- There may be around 40.000
Sámi in Norway, but only soime 25.000 speakers.
Some self-governing rights have been granted to them
lately, with the openning of the Sámi Assembly in
Guovdageaidnu. The Sámi language has some official
status since 1990 in six councils of the counties of
Finnmark and Troms: Guovdageaidnu, Porsánggu,
Gáivuotna, Deatnu, Unjárga and
Kárás<johka. In those areas North Sami
is spoken, further south there are still speakers of Lule
Sámi and South Sámi in Nordland, the
Trøndelag counties and Hedmark.
