Lincolnshire is a largely rural county, halfway up the east coast of England. It has a long history. Lincoln was a major Roman city in the second century AD. A number of Roman ruins are still dotted around the city. The Normans also made it a principal city in the 12th century, building its impressive cathedral and castle. In between the Romans and Normans, it was also the territory of the Anglo-Saxons and Danes.
While the Danes left few physical reminders of their occupation, their memory is carried on in most of the place names of Lincolnshire, such as Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Wainfleet and Friskney. The two latter towns are halfway up the coast of Lincolnshire and were the home of the Whileys. The name Whiley is also believed to be of Danish origin. And like most of the other folk in the county, they were farmers.

Isaac and Mary arrived in Sydney on 31-8-1837 aboard the City of Edinburgh. They didn't stay in Sydney long. As farmers, they were quick to take up land in the Richmond/Windsor area north-west of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River. A few years later, they headed further west over the Blue Mountains, where vast tracts of land were being opened up. A number of family members followed Isaac to Australia. His brother George and family arrived in 1840. Mother Betsy arrived in 1844 and youngest brother Joshua also followed.
