A spirit voice, And vocal joys,
Whose echo is heaven's bliss.

"Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it" Ezra 10:4.

So many days we want to give in and give up! We have such a difficult time believing that God and our loyal friends do support us. On the other hand, matters in another's hands means our support and loyalty and love to that person. We may be just the one to hold up heart and hands of someone in need: "Aaron and Hur held [Moses'] hands up–one on one side, one on the other–so that his hands remained steady..." Exodus 17:12.

"That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain..." Exodus 18:22c; "They will help you carry the burden of the people so that you will not have to carry it alone " Numbers 11:17c. Pride often says no to help. But here God helps us to bear by telling us to share. Often just a listening (h)ear(t) lifts the load off the heart and mind of another.
"Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus..." Mark 2:4. Here the paralytic's friends demonstrated the faith that moves a friend through a mountain of difficulties and discouragements. This is the kind of love and support we all need at times, both to give and to receive. This man's friends had courage and faith to do the unthinkable. We, too, may need to make an opening for someone we love.

"He went to him and bandaged his wounds..." Luke 10:34. Perhaps our friend has a heart wound that needs our compassion and heart muscles that need strengthening so he or she can go on with duties. We can bandage and bolster with an unconditional love that understands. We each have our tasks to fulfill, but at times the tasks seem overwhelming; it is then that God grants a gift of a faithful friend who can talk it through with us.

"There in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf!" Genesis 8:11b.

The fresh leaf! The sign of hope! We have new leaves every day; in fact, each day itself is a new leaf. A new and exciting idea is a new leaf that grows into many leaves of an article or book. A delicious meal, a visit from a friend, an unexpected letter with good news, a compliment, an unusually beautiful sunrise or sunset, an affecting cantata: these are leaves of hope and love. It's an appealing thought.

Sometimes all we want is a leaf of a thank you that will stimulate us to further actions; perhaps our child needs a leaf of appreciation; a student gives a professor a leaf when she tells him that others have recommended his course because he is such a good teacher; our friend receives a leaf when we write and say, "I love you and I miss you."

There is yet another compelling thought here: if we but wait, as Noah had to, we will have joy again. The waters seem about to sweep us away. At times circumstances seem impossible and it is easier to give up. The black raven of despair, the carrion bird, settles in our hair and in our heart and we are so tempted to let it make a nest and eat away at our vitals. But our gracious God will not allow that! The dove, symbol of gentleness, brought Noah the sign of deliverance, and He will do the same for us.

Our dry and fruitful land may yet be far off, but God will finally send us His dove with an olive leaf of deliverance! In the meantime, God asks that we trust Him; that we remain within the ark of the circumstance until His good time. How difficult this is! For now He is asking us to prepare ourselves for a great mercy from Him that we can share with others. It is the broken heart that understands other broken hearts. It is yet another converting experience when we are in the Ark, but God is getting us ready to share leaves!

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions

Spurgeon's Morning for March 10

Spurgeon's Evening for March 10

"Man ... is of few days, and full of trouble."

-   Job 14:1

"In my prosperity I said I shall never be moved."

- Psalm 30:6

Let us recollect the frail tenure upon which we hold our temporal mercies. If we would remember that all the trees of earth are marked for the woodman's axe, we should not be so ready to build our nests in them.

Brother, beware of the smooth places of the way; if you are treading them, or if the way be rough, thank God for it.

Spurgeon's Evening for March 11

"Sin ... exceeding sinful."

-  Romans 7:13

"Thou shalt be called, Sought out."

-  Isaiah 62:12

It is sadly true, that even a Christian may grow by degrees so callous, that the sin which once startled him does not alarm him in the least. By degrees men get familiar with sin.

The surpassing grace of God is seen very clearly in that we were not only sought, but sought out. Men seek for a thing which is lost upon the floor of the house, but in such a case there is only seeking, not seeking out. The loss is more perplexing and the search more persevering when a thing is sought out.

Resignation

SMILE

SMILE

I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year-old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rock. I want to think M&M's are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree, and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day.

I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life, and be overly excited by the little things again. I want to live simple again.

I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountain of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So . . . here's my checkbook, my car keys, my credit card bills, and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, well, you'll have to catch me first, cause. . .

"TAG!! YOU'RE IT!!!"

Obedience

"I will love them freely ... "

Hosea 14:4 NKJV

Unconditional love! Sounds great, doesn't it? To love in spite of instead of spite ... Unconditional! Who can do this? How can I love this person who has ripped my heart into tiny bits of hate and resentment? Oh yes, I read and reread that lovely passage from 1 Corinthians 13 when I feel the anger and hate welling up. I have even made a poster out of the NIV version of Verse 5: "[Love] keeps no record of wrongs" to keep me from dredging out the old woe-is-me's in times of anger.

Imagine my surprise when I finally discovered – with our Good Shepherd's prodding and in spite of my plodding – that this is a choice we make. Indeed, we can decide to be pleasant or unpleasant when we wake in the morning. It's the old "as-if" principle: I'll act as if I truly love this person, and before I know it, I do! It sneaks up on us, thank God.

Years ago I read the following: "I love you today, where you are and as you are. You do not have to be anything but what you are for me to love you. I love you now; not sometime when you are worthy, but today when you may need love most. I will not withhold my love, or withdraw it. There are no strings on my love, no price. I will not force it upon you when you are not ready. It is just there, freely offered, with both hands. Take what you want today. The more you take, the more there is. It is good if you can return love; but if you cannot today, that is all right too. Love is its own joy. Bless me by letting me love you today." Author Unknown.

There it is – unconditional, no strings attached, I love you as Jesus loves you. I love you because God first loved me. He loved me enough to forgive my sins, so how can I do less for you? Forgive me for not loving you! Forgive me for the wasted words and years when I could have held and upheld you and made both our lives easier. Love is so much easier, really. I mean the love that wants what is best for you and will help you with your life.

Now excuse me while I go bury the old heart at the foot of the Cross ...
