        THE COPSE - MELCEY MELEE

You move through the thick purple-red of the foliage, brushing at a little bug that seems to really like your shirt, distracted. Very suddenly you find yourself steping into an open glade, the dry, crisp air moving about you in a slight breeze, dancing through the leaves. You look about, wondering if any creatures reside here, when a feeling of chill envelops you, like a cloud of fear with wisps lancing into you, making your hair stand up. You whirl around and look up instinctively, only then noticing a creature sitting in the branches above where you entered the clearing. The creature blends into the foliage, deep blues and red wings melding into the deep purple of the leaves and the almost-black of the branches and vines. The only movement in the still,
serene creature is its eyes. They are black - the ancient black of a Pharoah's kohl and of an Ancient river's depths - the depth of the universe and of inner darkness. Something glints around the male's neck...a tiny gold chain engraved with the letters "B.T." You wonder what it means.....until a rustling of bushes comes from the right of the little darkling. Another creature, a blure female, steps onto the branch, nuzzling the stone-still visage warmly before seating herself next to him, as silent as he, but without the desperate, grating aura of the one who is obviously her mate. You gave at the silver chain about this silent new one's neck and read 'Obej'Chrika - Acid Myst.' Lovely name, you think to yourself, until sharp, short chirps cut you off mid-thought!

You whirl to your left and see six small animals looking quite cute and surprised to see you in their territory! They resemble the creature still watching you from the tree, but none of them have that forboding sense of blackness about them. All six are sitting in two rows, playing some sort of game with a small pink ball...a game which your arrival interupted. But they don't seem perturbed, and the first of the creatures closest to you chitters a bit at her companions, then up at the tree-top guardian.

Two of the small creatures patter forward, one a very bouncy female with a firey yellow body, the other a more sedate male with a cloudy blue furtone. They bow gracefully and in unison, throwing a glance at the other four sitting behind them. The female speaks first. "I am a Fire Melcey from the Purple Savannah. My name is Mino'ukycsa, which means Fire Glow in your tongue! I and my quiet companion, Caelum, which is Sky in Latin, are two of the future members of the Pack Of Oddling Stars, which we are still in the process of getting started! Caelum is a Sky Melcey, and very shy, often sleepy, too!" She giggles and points out that most of the Melceys here will be members of the Pack, which gets its name from the fact that any type of Melcay will be able to join! "Even he has said he might be in the Pack..." She points to the Melcey that watches and frightened you before. Mino' nuzzles her mate and moves back toward the group, chirping at another pair of Melceys to come forward and introduce themselves.

Another two shuffle forward, one with a black body, the other with black markings, all but blending in with the deep fusia leaves and grasses around them. They bow as well and the black-bodied female speaks up. "I am Chyoxa, and Earth Melcey. You'll excuse me if I'm not the...umm...social type. I'm just very new here, as is my mate, Ayoins." She nuzzles the deep purple Melcey next to her. He is a Water Melcey. "It is very nice to meet you...Oh! And my mate and I have wonderful news! We've had our first little of pups! Come and meet our daughter and her new mate!" She leads you over to wher two bright-colored Melceys sit batting at the ball.

The small fire-colored female steps forward and greets you, her mate a step behind her. "I am EgyptEmber, a Fire Melcey, and also technically the first offspring of the future Pack!" She moves over to her mate, full or energy and youth, and whispers in his ear. He smiles and you realize that a moment before he was looking very wary and a bit aggressive. He speak up, his light brown not quite matching the deep set of his voice. "Hile, wanderer. I'm sorry I was a bit nervous there, but I tend to be a tad...overdefensive. Again, I aplogize. I am AztecSun, and I am very pleased to meet you." He bows and moves off to retreive the pink ball he was just playing with

Just as he is about to pick up the ball, two more little Melceys that you had notices staying hidden by the trees dart out and the first snatches the ball away, both of them darting back toward the trees and dissapearing with the ball in a flash of brown and violet!

This brings forth a chorus of shouts and laughes as several of the Melceys run after their quick friend, wrestling and play-fighting over the little ball. You smile at their antics and ask the new little one's name. Mino' answers, having stayed behind out of the mellee. "The first one is Corinth, an earth Melcey, and very shy! But he can be very witty and he VERY fast! A good athlete and mouse-catcher, for practical purposes, and also a master of practical jokes! His friend is our newest addition to this grove and to the Pack of the Oddling Stars. He is name is Clamore'xek Eiren Jre Oloca Lay'wac Shesame'....quite the name, no?! It means Storm's Shadow On Chocolate Brown Wood. We call his Clamore for short! He is very quiet and...well...a little odd, but no more than some of the others who were born of Hallowed Eve! He is learned a little to much of practical joking from Corinth, I think..." The last is said with a hint of indignation, making you believe that Mino' must have been the brunt of one of those jokes!

You watch them wrestle a bit more and them settle back into their places, this time with Corinth and Clamore joining in, to resume their gaming. In giggling, excited voices they ask you if you'd like to join them in a game of Efl'Vislu..or Paw Pong? You giggle at the name and then refuse politely, claiming the need to move on and the fact that you are much larger than the little creatures and it would give you an unfair advantage. They chorus their goodbyes good-naturedly and go back to their game, completely focused on the small pink ball's quick bouncing.

But before you can leave, the dark one moves down from his tree perch beside his well-matched mate, slinking toward you - really there is no other term for one that moves with such odd grace - and blasting you with one final image....something gruesome and bloody, coupled with the thought that this will be your fate if you harm so much as a hair of those he protects. Prevalant is the image of his mate, the impression of deep, agonizing feeling for the female that could only be some form of love... You are on your knees now, and the little Darkness is resuming his place as guardian. You wonder his name, and he answers in a blast of seething fear and image behind your eyelids.....

Now you are left to make the decision of whether to go back to Roreph's Glade or onward down the fusia-leaved path ahead of you into yet another unknown portion of the UnderCopse. Or you could decide to take your leave of this place of vines and purpled grasses.....

Though you can see almost nothing through the thick foliage, you remember the directions from your journey through the Mystic Meadows. Onward to the NorthWest is the verdant and shining green of the many Sha Fields, while going back out the way you came will take you back toward the Equaritha Fields.....
