When it comes to a newer model Jeep, there isn't much "wasted space" for us to take advantage of. Very little in fact. In my case, the spare space under the rear seat is gobbled up by a large 5 channel amp on one side, and a siren control box on the other. Under the hood, there still isn't much.... ok. There is NONE. The space under the front seats is laughable. All that is left is undercarriage and the rear cargo floor.

I actually considered mounting an air tank under the ZJ, but there is absolutely no protection. There is a spot inside the "frame" on the driver's side and behind the transfercase, but there is no protection. Something I may consider later, but not for now. After considering what my options were, I went "shopping". I located the best deal for my air compressor through Quadratec. I did some conparison shopping, and found that the VIAR 450c was the best option for the price. It is 100% duty cycle, which peaked my interest, too.

When the option went to the air tank, I decided to go on and order the full kit from Quadratec. In addition to the pump, it came with everything BUT the tank. Gauge, switch, fused wire... flexible line... I was set. Once the kit arrived, I went out into the shop and retreived an old Cambell-Hausfield 2 gallon air compressor. The pump had failed a few years ago, but I kept it around. As luck would have it, I was able to fit the pressure switch into the same hole on the tank as the origial C-H AC switch. I later found that I had to run a small drill bit in the hole to clean some loose scale out that had plugged the hole. I strongly advise this at any rate. You do NOT have to enlarge the hole, as flow is of no use here.

Everything went together real good. I had considered a few options for the gauge. The last thing I needed was one more thing cluttering the interior of the ZJ. I already had a dual universal A-pillar cluster in there, but I remembered that I still had the stingle gauge pod I originally bought. I ended up removeing the dual pod and moving it as far down the A-pillar as I could and still put the thing on. I added the single pod and had to trim the very top corner off of it to fit the curve of the A-pillar.

The end results were very nice. I figured having 3 gauges on the A-pillar of the ZJ would be kinda ricey... or just plain ugly. I actually liked it once it was together. So, now, the A-pillar houses the O-2 gauge, Tranny Temp and the air compressor gauge with switch. Not too bad.

The system runs pretty good. The pump shuts off anf 150psi and comes on at 90. I thought that 150 was too high. Just a little uncomfortable. I got the old C-H regulator out and put it on with a airline plug. That regulated the pressure tot he tools back down to 90. The truth is that this is not a York. Having one on my CJ was what spoiled me. On the trail, I can run my 1/2" drive impact wrench just fine. I can bust 4-5 of the lugs loose on one wheel before pausing to let the pressure build back up. I can run my air drill, air tires up and run dang near anything that hooks to an air compressor, including dir grinders and cutters. While the tank and pump sitting in the rear cargo area are not the most ideal, it does in fact work. It really isnt all that loud either. I can comfortably run the pump and turn the stereo up a little (not too loud), and it isnt much of a bother. The ZJ is noisy enough anyway, so who knows. :-)
