Instructor Recommendations

3 Sheets 2 the Wind is dedicated to providing students with special insight to get through Jacksonville State University. Experienced college students will tell you that the key to making good grades in a course is the instructor. However, even with a good instructor you still have to show up for class and do the required work. We rate  teachers as follows:

3 sheets = excellent
2 sheets = good
1 sheet = average

To find out about the instructors we recommend, please click on the first letter of the subject you are interested in. Note, not all of these have a recommendation. We would appreciate your input on teachers you would recommend to your friends. Please include your reason for recommending a teacher.  You can e-mail us at:

Communications

3 sheets
Geni Certain - Internet Production. This class is for Communication majors. Ms. Certain maintains the Web Site for the Anniston Star so she has the practical experience to teach this class. It is an enjoyable class with hands-on experience. She is currently an adjunct, and if anyone in the administration is reading this - we want her back.

3 sheets++++++++++
Jerome G. Chandler - Mr. Chandler teaches some of the required courses for a major in Communications, such as Intro to Mass Comm., Broadcast Writing, Intro to Audio Production, Comm. Ethics and Comm. Law.    As Communication majors, we feel strongly that the main reason we chose to pursue this field after taking the required Intro to Mass Comm. course was because Mr. Chandler got us excited about the possibilities open to us in Communications. He is very passionate about his work and extremely entertaining. Students can express themselves freely through the various projects he assigns in his classes. He is truly worth your time and effort.

3 sheets
Lloyd Dobyns - Intro to News, Advanced Reporting and On-Line Research. This former NBC-TV newsman has been there, done that. He was an international correspondent for 14 years and the author of two books. If you are a communication major, you will learn and profit from this man's experience. He is always willing to talk to individual students and he has some great stories.

Education

3 sheets
Blanche Colley - Special Education.  She is the Oprah Winfrey of JSU; a title she received from her video conference class. She has worked in the field, so she knows what she is talking about. Education majors don't miss the opportunity to learn from this lady.

3 sheets
Dr. Carol Uline - Any Education Course. Education majors take this teacher for any subject she teaches that you require. You won't regret it.

3 sheets
Dr. Barbara Yunker - Developmental Psychology. She is a good teacher.  However, she becomes easily frustrated in her videoconferencing class.  If there are any technical glitches, she sends students home. Don't you just hate that?

English

3 sheets
Dr. Carmine Di Biase- Dr. Di Biase teaches EH 101, 102, 203, 204, Chaucer, Shakespeare, etc. His knowledge of literature is extremely good so his lectures are always informative. If you are having trouble understanding what you have read, he is always willing to go out of the way to help. With this instructor, you can't possibly go wrong. He makes every course a challenge and expects his students to excel. Dr. Di Biase is a tough instructor but his dedication to the students of this school is unquestionable.

2 sheets
Susan Methvin - Creative Writing. Another great class for those of you needing an English elective (although it cannot be used as credit for English majors a majority of the time, see your advisor for details). If you want to tap into your creative side try this one  for size. Although creative writing may bring to mind all genre this class is strictly prose. There is a required text, but thankfully it is a small, cheap collection of short stories. The work required for a good grade is brief essays about short stories, updating original short story works and journal work collected throughout the semester.

3 sheets
Jean Smart - Advanced Oral Communication. You can use this class as an English elective if you have an English minor (see your advisor). If you get the jitters, need some extra help and some encouragement; this is a great class. This class is informative and fun. No text is required and all the grading is based on several speeches given throughout the semester.

G

Geology

3 sheets
Dr. Kelly Gregg - Physical and Historical Geology. You may be able to fulfill your core natural science requirement with this course (consult your adviser). This is an entertaining and less demanding science course. If you show up for the classes and take notes, you can get by without a text book. You will need a lab book unless you are an education major and do not have to take the lab.

History

3 sheets+++++
Dr. Rayford Taylor - It is with great sadness that we report the untimely death of a great educator. Dr. Taylor taught American History, History of Early America to 1783, Antebellum Plantations of N.E. Alabama, Russian History, etc. He made an otherwise boring subject, American History, interesting with his many stories and tales of life in early America. His vast knowledge of the subject, showed in his animated accounts of how our culture has evolved and changed since colonial days of the past. Our sympathies go out to his family, close friends and students. His presence will be missed in the classrooms of the History department.

P

Political Science

3 sheets
Dr. Jimmy Allen - No, he's not crazy. He just talks to himself, because he is the only person intelligent enough for him to hold a conversation with. However, he insists on his students showing up for  class, but the price of admission is worth it.

Telecourses

A word of advice about telelcourses. Don't take these courses if you are looking for an easy A. These courses were designed for students who are self motivated and those who don't already have a full class load. If you feel that you would not do well without lots of lectures on the material, this is not the way to go. Please think long and hard  before you sign up for one of these courses. Although they look convenient, it takes a little extra effort to do well in these courses.
