Most of the controls are self explanatory but there are one or two "gotchas" to beware of.
Starting from the front, and marked (but not visible) is the Fuel Crossfeeed drain cock. It normally resides in the horizontal position and is spring loaded to permit Crossfeeed fuel system draining (part of the Pre Flight checks). The "toggle" is not terribly tight and it has a habit of working loose. Please treat carefully.
The black knobs are as marked, Cowl Flaps, and operate by lifting the Black knobs and pushing the levers forward. They are shown in the Open Position. The spring loaded black knobs should click into place a either end of their travel.
It is possible to have partially open Cowl flaps, and in general, they should be operated as suggested by the CHT gauges and set as stated in the Check List.
The fuel Selector knobs (Red) are currently shown with the outboard tanks selected. There are actually two sets of outboard tanks - Wing tanks and Tip tanks - but the tip tanks drain into the wing tanks and for practical purposes can be treated as one tank. In addition to the Panel Fuel Gauges, there is a fuel gauge for each tank built into the wing surface, which is a reasonably reliable guide to the state of the tanks. As always make a visual check, especially after refueling.
GOTCHA 1
When re-fuelling, PLEASE ENSURE THAT THE FILLER CAPS ARE WELL (AND CENTRALLY) SEATED BEFORE THE LATCH IS PRESSED DOWN. THE FILLER CAPS ARE NOTORIOUSLY TRICKY IN THIS RESPECT, AND UNLESS THEY ARE PROPERLY SEATED A CONSIDERABLE QUANTITY OF FUEL WILL BE DRAWN OUT BY SUCTION IN FLIGHT AND LOST OVERBOARD.
GOTCHA 2
The Gotcha here is that because of the location of the seat harness stem (which for both Pilot and Co-Pilot are fixed to the inboard edges of the seat) it is possible, either by adjusting the seat position either on the ground or in flight for some reason, or by adjusting the harness itself, to accidentally knock the Red Knobs so that the lever is returned to its central position, thus cutting of fuel to that engine.
TAKE GREAT CARE THEREFORE TO ENSURE THAT WHEN SELECTING THE TANK USING THE RED KNOBS, THAT THE SPRING LOADED RED KNOB IS FULLY LATCHED DOWN INTO THE HOLES WHICH CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN IN THE PHOTO ABOVE.
The Cross Feed Selector (here shown at "off") is operated by simply pushing it forward. See Checklist for Correct Operating Procedure
