The Barker Fire Hall was the location for the Official
Barker Relay for Life 2002 Kickoff Breakfast.  A wonderful breakfast
buffet was provided by Donna Eick. What an inspiring and
  motivating event it was!

"We had no idea, when we
started, that our relay would be setting the standard for Western New
        York" -
        Relay Chairperson, Darlene Lutz
This was in response to the outstanding performance
of the Barker Relay for Life in 2001.  This event drew 999
registered walkers and raised over $123,000.00 for cancer
research.  The third highest total in the ACS
Eastern Division, which covers all of New York and New Jersey. Back to Top |

Barker's own, Margo Sue Bittner, will
lead the Survivor's Lap as the Honored Survivor for 2002.
The survivor's lap is a parade of volunteers who have survived cancer
kicks off the Relay.  Unbeknownst to Margo, she would be diagnosed
with breast cancer just one short month following her participation in
        last year's relay.
Mrs. Bittner shared five lessons that she has learned as a cancer
survivor in her usual witty style.  Chief among those
lessons:  There is humor in every situation and that a supportive
        community helps people to heal.

Relay sponsor, Dr. Kyu Shin of CCS Oncology,
in  Lockport, N.Y. spoke eloquently using a story from the book of
Mark in the Bible.  Dr. Shin illustrated "The four ACS
Missions are like the four men who carried their friend to Jesus for his
forgiveness."   "Cancer is truly an equal
opportunity disease that affects all races, all ages, all ethnic and
        professional backgrounds." |
