| Chapter 2 | ||||||
| The next morning, Brian awoke to an empty bed. He reached out to put his arm around Leighanne, but instead found a rumpled sheet. He stretched his arms and rubbed his eyes before looking around the room. At the edge of the divider between the bedroom and the living room, he saw a long white curtain flapping in the wind. He crawled down the bed and reached down to the floor to locate the pair of boxers he had worn the day before. He clumsily pulled them on before stumbling across the room toward the billowing curtain. When he reached it, he pushed it away to reveal an open patio door leading to the small balcony overlooking the ocean. He came up behind his wife, who was clad in a soft white robe. His arms circled around her waist, and he leaned closer to her to lightly kiss her on the back of the neck. He breathed in deeply as the warm salty air invaded his lungs. He looked down at the ocean, as the waves crashed against the rocks below. "This is beautiful," his wife said softly, gazing down at the scene below. "Not as beautiful as you," Brian whispered, leaning his head lightly on her shoulder. She turned around to face him, and a faint smile crept across her lips. She slowly moved her face toward his until their lips met. She prodded his mouth with her tongue until his lips parted. She slipped her tongue into his mouth, and slid it across his tongue. He received the kiss, massaging her tongue with his. His arms circled around her back until her body was firmly pressed against his. A soft moan escaped her lips as he slipped his hands under her robe and slowly guided them upward until they reached her breasts. The wind chilled her body so she pressed closer to his as if to absorb his warmth. Brian lowered his hands to embrace her lower back. She shivered and pulled away from his kiss. "Let's go inside," she whispered. "It's getting cold out here." "I'll keep you warm," he invited, and they slowly traveled back towards the bed. Brian closed his eyes and slipped his hands out of her robe and up to her arms. He pulled them down until they were level with his hips. Their fingers intertwined, he leaned in to kiss her. Just as their lips were about to meet, he felt a presence behind him again. He abruptly ended the kiss and let go of his wife's hands. He turned around and sure enough, the mysterious girl stood at the edge of the room, this time in front of the bathroom door. As he dashed toward her, she opened the door and slipped inside. Before she had a chance to close the door behind her, Brian stopped the door with his foot. He looked into the room and saw nothing until he cautiously wandered inside and turned the corner. He finally noticed her standing in the bathtub, her hands once again loosely clasped in front of her. Her smile faded and was replaced with a look of fear. "Who the Hell are you, and why do you keep following me around?" Brian asked accusingly. He regretted the harshness in his voice the moment the words escaped from his lips. The tiny girl was obviously of no threat to him, but her very presence unnerved him. She was silent for a moment before speaking. "I have come to take you for a walk into the darkness," she replied, her faint smile returning. Her gaze never left his, and it seemed to burn a hole into his soul. "E-excuse me?" he stammered, his anger dissipating into a steadily increasing fear. "It is time," she said, almost sadly. "It is time for you to come with me." "Where? What? Where is it time for me to go?" he asked, his voice cracking. "It is not important where you are going, it only matters that you obey," she said, her soft voice flowing out of her tiny body as smoothly as honey. "I-I don't understand!" he exclaimed. "Obey who?" "Obey the master," she said, once again sadly. "Should you not… you will lose your love." "My love?" he choked. "What do you mean?!" "It is the gift. The Creator's only gift," she replied, her voice never wavering. "What gift?" he asked, his anger and fear disappearing, replaced with a dulling numbness. "Her gift," she said. "And yours, if you should choose to obey," the girl added, her once sparkling eyes now dull with the face of what she was about to tell him. She continued before he had a chance to ask another question. "One girl. One girl in the world has had only one wish. The wish has invaded her whole being. The Creator has chosen to honour this wish. In the entire existence of his presence, he will only grant one wish. He has chosen hers. Should you not honour the wish, you will lose your wife, and your life will crumble. Should you obey, you will return to your life, and it will gleam like never before." "I don't think I understand," Brian said, regaining whatever composure he could. "What does this 'wish' have to do with me?" "The girl has wished for you," she answered, her faint smile once again crossing her thin lips. Her image slowly faded away until Brian was looking at an empty space in the bathtub. "Wait!" he yelled. "Wait!" But it was too late. The girl was gone. He slowly sauntered out of the bathroom to face his angry wife, her hands perched on her hips, and a scowl pasted on her face. "What is wrong with you?" she demanded. "Why do you keep running away from me? This is our honeymoon, for Christ's sake!" "I know, honey. I'm sorry, I really am. It's just that I'm a little… out of it right now. It'll pass. I just need to spend some time with you." "I hope so," she said, her anger crumbling beneath his charm. She walked toward him and put her arms around him. She rested her head on his chest and listened to his steadily beating heart. "Let's start over," Brian said. "Let's start this all over, and have the happiest time of our lives." He looked down at his wife and resolved to ignore the image he had seen in the bathroom. |
