| Chapter 9 | ||||||
| The first stop Brian and Holly made before heading out into the city was the drugstore. Brian picked up a box of temporary hair dye, and Holly looked for some sunglasses for him. "What about this colour?" Brian asked, holding up a box of platinum blonde hair colour. Holly made a face. "You'd stand out with that around here," she said, turning back to the spinning rack of sunglasses. "Not many guys bleach their hair anymore. You'll need either brown or black." She continued skimming the sunglasses until she spotted a pair near the bottom. She bent down to pull them off the rack, then held them up to the light. "Perfect!" she said, turning them around in her hands. She looked back toward Brian who had his face in a frown, looking at the display of hair colour. "Can't find anything to suit you?" Holly asked, moving to stand beside him. "No, that's not it. It's just that these colours are all permanent," he said, putting his hand on his hip. He leaned over to read the labels, but the look of dismay never left his face. "I'm pretty sure that's all they have," Holly said. After speaking with a saleswoman, her suspicions were confirmed. The sales that summer had been low, so they hadn't ordered any extra stock. Holly picked up a box. "It looks like you're either going to get burnt sienna or midnight black." When he didn't say anything, Holly looked up at him. His ears were pricked up, and he was straining to hear to the faint music that flooded the store. "You like that song?" Holly asked, instantly recognizing the music. "Yeah… I remember it from somewhere. It sounds familiar," he said, closing his eyes. "I know it," Holly said, and smiled at the thought. "It's by Shania Twain… one of my favourites." They both stood in silence, listening to the melody that pumped into the store. Am I dreamin' or stupid? I think I've been hit by Cupid But no one needs to know right now I met a tall, dark and handsome man And I've been busy makin' big plans But no one needs to know right now I got my heart set, my feet wet But he don't even know it yet But no one needs to know right now I'll tell him someday, some way, somehow But I'm gonna keep it a secret for now I want bells to ring, a choir to sing The white dress, the guests, the cake, the car, the whole darn thing But no one needs to know right now I'll tell him someday, some way, somehow But I'm gonna keep it a secret for now We'll have a little girl, a little boy, A little Benji we call Leroy But no one needs to know right now And I'm not lonely anymore at night And he don't know only he can make it right And I'm not lonely anymore at night And he don't know only he can make it right I'm not dreamin' or stupid But, boy, have I been hit by Cupid But no one needs to know right now No one needs to know right now... **Song "No One Needs to Know" by Shania Twain, written by Twain/Lange, from the album "The Woman In Me", released 1995** Holly felt her heart rush as she heard the song. She could completely identify with it. The man of her dreams was standing beside her, and she was content in loving him without him knowing it. She was relishing in her delight when she noticed Brian zoning off into some faraway daydream. The song was light and poppy, but it seemed to engulf Brian's mind like a deep ballad would. He was surprised when Holly appeared in his thoughts, smiling at him. She raced away from him in a sunny field, laughing uncontrollably. His hands flailed about as he reached out to catch her, but she was too fast. When he finally caught up to her, the force of his body slamming into hers sent them both sprawling on the ground. She giggled, the sunlight twinkling in her sparkling green eyes. He pushed a stray lock of hair away from her face and gazed at her. Her smile seemed to penetrate the deepest corners of his heart. He leaned in and was just about to kiss her when his mind was snapped back to reality by a loud crash. His eyes widened with confusion until he realized that in the midst of his daydream, he had dropped the box of hair dye he had been clutching in his right hand. "Let's take that as a sign," Holly said, bending down to snatch up the box. She put it back on the display shelf and picked up the other shade. "Burnt Sienna it is… The police are finished investigating," she then commented. "We can go back to my house now, if you want to." Brian only nodded his agreement. After they had paid for the dye and sunglasses, they went to Holly's house. When they arrived at the front door of the house, Brian finally realized how beautiful it was. Warm sunlight poured through the cloudless sky to shine on the large brick structure. It was three stories high and in ramshackle condition, but Brian could already imagine its possibilities. "My dad keeps saying we're going to fix it up, but I doubt we ever will," Holly remarked in explanation of the house’s condition. "I've lived here all my life, and we've never done anything drastic to it." "Is it as beautiful inside as it is outside?" Brian asked, eagerly. "Beautiful?" Holly asked, astonished. "I've always thought of this thing as a pile of junk!" "Junk with possibilities," Brian said, imagining a tirelessly landscaped garden surrounding the ivy clad home. Before he had time to think about it any further, Brian found the two of them standing on the front porch. Holly opened the heavy oak door and stepped inside. She held the door open for him, and the moment Brian stepped inside, he could feel an immediate coolness flood over his body. "Central air?" he asked, looking at Holly. "No," she said. "With this house, we don't need it. "It stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter all by itself." Holly gave him a tour of the house, from the dusty basement to the cluttered third floor, which served as an oversized attic. The last stop was Holly's bedroom, which was on the second floor. As they neared the door to her room, Holly turned to Brian and he could see that her eyes had taken on a mysterious glint. "I'm going to warn you now. BRACE YOURSELF!" she said seriously. “Everything you thought you may have seen will mean nothing to you once I open this door.” Her hand rose from its position against her hip to rest on the doorknob. "I'm serious. I'll be surprised if you don't turn around and run." The serious look vanished from her face and was replaced with a playful grin. "I love it, though." She opened the door a crack and peeked in before turning back to him. "Are you sure you want to come in?" "Yeah, sure," Brian said. "It can't be that much of a mess." "It's not that kind of mess," Holly said, shaking her head. "What kind of mess is it?" Brian asked, puzzled. "Oh, you'll see," Holly said, now grinning from ear to ear. She opened the door slowly until Brian could see into her room. His eyes grew wide and he gasped. He stood in shock at the sight he beheld before collapsing onto the floor. |
