Chapter 15
"Come in," Brian instructed when he heard the knock on his door. The door opened a crack, and he could see Holly's startling green eyes peering in. She slowly pushed the door all the way open until she was standing in plain view of him. She felt so vulnerable at that moment, knowing what she had to do.

"Sleep well?" she asked at an attempt to make idle chatter.

"No, not really," Brian answered. He had the feeling that they both knew what was about to happen.

"Oh," Holly said listlessly, not bothering to ask why. She felt she already knew. The room was silent for a moment before she continued.

"I think we both know why I'm here," she said, voicing her assumption.

"Last night," Brian admitted, hanging his head shamefully.

"Yeah… I was hoping we could just wipe the slate clean. I mean, with you married and all…" Holly started.

Before Brian could voice his agreement, he caught sight of a certain light in her eyes. She was sacrificing her happiness for him. She knew he was happy with Leighanne, and had put that before her own happiness. He gazed intently at her for a moment, smitten with not only her manner but also her undeniable beauty. Shiny black tendrils of hair fell from the loose ponytail that held it back from her face.  He caught a glimpse of her sparkling green eyes, and his words caught in his throat.

Holly looked up into his eyes when she felt him stroking her hair. "I made a mistake," she apologized. "I knew better, but I couldn't stop myself."

"I know…" Brian agreed. "Me too."  The room was silent for a moment before he continued. "I know last night was wrong, but it still feels so right."

"Still?" Holly asked, confused.

Brian ignored her question. "Last night when I went to bed, I felt nothing but regret. I knew I had to tell you that kissing you was a mistake. Like you said, I'm married.  But when you walked in here just now…" he looked down at Holly, who was listening attentively. "…everything I felt last night came rushing back."

Holly leaned in as if to kiss him, then jerked her head back. She jumped off the bed and scampered toward the door. "I can't let you do this," she said. "I can't let you ruin your marriage because of me." With that, she left the room and shut the door behind her.

As soon as she left, Brian broke down. Tears flooded down his cheeks with the heartbreak of a thousand lifetimes. The fact that he knew Holly was right made him cry even harder. He had never been so confused in his life.
