Chapter 18
Holly stared at Ryan in shock. "We never talked about this," she said, shaking her head in disbelief.

"Not exactly a yes or no, but we're getting there," Ryan said to himself.

Holly ignored him. "I still live with my parents... I'm so young!" she argued.

"So?" he challenged. "I know I love you, and that's all that matters."

She remained silent for a moment, afraid she'd put her foot in her mouth if she spoke any further.

"I have to get out of here," she choked out.

"What? Holly!" Ryan yelped, grabbing her arm as she attempted to stand.

"Let go of me, Ryan!" she snapped, her eyes glistening with tears.

"What are you doing?" he asked, silently pleading with her to stay.

"I don't know," she said, slumping back into the chair. "I'm so confused!"

"About...?" Ryan asked, loosening his grip on her arm.

"I just..." Holly began, questioning whether or not to tell him the whole story. He was, after all, her boyfriend. "I just don't know. I love you, but I don't know if I'm ready for this," she finished, choosing to stay on the safe side.

"I can't say I don't understand. Just promise me you'll think about it?" Ryan asked, searching for an answer in her eyes.

"Yeah; I'll think about it, Ryan," she answered, removing her arm from his grasp to rub her temples.

He hugged her, taking Holly by surprise. She took the invitation and breathed in deeply. "I don't deserve you," she whispered softly, the tears beginning to flow down her cheeks. She knew now that her problems were only beginning... yet a solution was in sight that could correct it all immediately. The deciding factor, though, was whether she would stay with Ryan or pursue her feelings for Brian.

She didn't sleep well that night.

The next morning, Holly woke to the sound of soft knocking on her bedroom door.

"Come in," she replied groggily, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. She was surprised to see Brian standing at her door, his hands thrust in his pockets.

"Brian," she said, propping herself up on the pillows behind her. "What are you doing here?"

"Your parents are at the station, filling out some damage reports," Brian answered, waving a hand toward the main floor of the house. "But I really just wanted to let you know that I'll be leaving now... I figured it would be pretty rude to leave without saying goodbye."

Holly suddenly snapped awake. "Going; now? Where? Your two weeks aren't over yet!"

Brian sighed. "Your parents didn't tell you, then. I thought it would be best for both of us if I stayed somewhere else until my time here is up. I've clearly caused a rift between you and your boyfriend, not to mention between Leighanne and I."

"You said you didn't care about that!" Holly protested, a scowl forming on her face.

"I wasn't thinking straight. I mean, I'm married now. You've got a nice relationship going now too, and I don't want to be the one to ruin that."

"You're not!" Holly cried, on the verge of tears. "Come here; sit down."

Brian walked cautiously to the edge of her bed and sat down.

"Now listen to me, Brian," she said, taking his hand and clasping it between her own. "If I didn't think there was something real between us, I never would have risked losing my relationship with Ryan. He means a lot to me, and we've been together for a long time, but when I'm with you it's special... it's like nothing else!"

Brian started to say something, then stopped.

"Tell me you feel it too... tell me I'm not wasting my breath here."

"I; yeah. I do feel the same way, but it's not going to work!" Brian said in frustration.

"That's only because you don't think it can," Holly countered, looking deep into his eyes. "We can make it work!"

"How?" he asked, helpless.

"It doesn't matter... all that matters is that we love each other."

"You can't love me... you don't even know me! I don't know you!"

"You know me enough to realize that what we have is special," Holly argued. "Tell me... would you have cheated on Leighanne, your wife, with some random girl?"

"No," Brian answered. It hadn't hit him until then that he had indeed cheated on his wife. He considered going along with Holly anyway, figuring he had ruined everything already anyway, then reconsidered.

Holly could sense the turmoil he was going through. Leaning forward, she kissed him. When he didn't respond, she tried again, this time with more feeling.

Collapsing into her arms, Brian followed suit. Soon they lay on the bed, making out.

His conscience kicking in, Brian pulled his mouth away from hers and stood. "This is wrong!"

Holly knew he was right, but her heart was telling her otherwise. "No," she said, tears pricking her eyes.

What the hell, Brian thought. His guilt was killing him, but he had to agree with Holly: at this moment, everything seemed so right; she seemed like the one he should be with.

They continued, this time Brian taking more of an initiative.

What he did to her felt so right... Holly could practically feel her heart swelling with love. At that moment, she wondered what she had been thinking by trying to deny her love for Brian over some silly romance... had Ryan ever made her feel this way? She couldn't recall... she didn't want to. All she knew was Brian in front of her, his arms slowly creeping up her back, holding her tight against him.

His sadness over leaving Leighanne fueling his actions, Brian found himself kissing Holly more intensely. She wasn't complaining. It felt as if what he was doing wasn't enough. Without thinking, he reached under Holly's shirt and felt around until his fingertips rested on the clasp of her bra.

Holly let out a cry of surprise as she realized what she was doing. A flicker of caution came over her, but the feelings Brian was inflicting within her proved to be stronger. Releasing her grip on his shoulders, Holly aided him in removing her shirt. Seconds later, she was naked from the waist up. The heat of the moment was stronger than either of them had anticipated... Holly could never have imagined her and Brian naked on her bed, but minutes later that very scene was unfolding in her bedroom.

Brian could feel the sweat pouring off his body in sheets. Looking down at Holly, he could think only of taking his frustrations out on making hard, intense love. He wasn't sure if she was ready to do what he intended, but one look into her eyes disproved any doubts he might have had.

Unlike a week before when it was Holly's voice alone which betrayed her fears of the burglars, that morning two screams could be heard echoing throughout the house.
